Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
A Kimball family has been displaced from its home due to a house fire that occurred about 7:45 p.m. last Thursday.
Homeowner Jay Thurin was outside at the time and he attempted to extinguish the blaze in its early stages with a garden hose and fire extinguishers, according to Kimball County Sheriff Harry Gillway.
The Kimball Volunteer Fire Department responded with two pumper trucks and 14 firefighters and had the blaze contained within 10 minutes.
According to Kimball Fire Chief Rick Wynne, the fire marshal's investigation concluded that the fire originated in a bathroom adjoined to the master bedroom.
The homeowners were remodeling and at some point a work lamp was knocked over and caught the carpet on fire.
"The fire marshal deemed that the fire was not of a suspicious nature," Gillway said. "It was an accident."
No injuries were reported and no one was inside the home, located at 201 N. Myrtle in Kimball, at the time of the fire.
"The rest of the house suffered considerable smoke damage," Wynne said.
The local Red Cross was able to assist the family following the incident, though local Red Cross representative Roger Gillming declined to comment.
"We are very fortunate to have Red Cross back in this area," Gillway said. "And I thank God no one was injured in the fire."
