POTTER - Potter-Dix got its first win of the season in style. The Coyotes jumped out to the early lead and went on to maul visiting South Platte for a 54-20 win on Friday night.
"Friday night was mostly just about our team finally getting close to healthy," said Potter-Dix football coach Dale Frerichs.
South Platte got on the scoreboard first, but Potter-Dix quickly came back to take an 8-6 lead in the first quarter. The Blue Knights went up 12-8 in the second quarter, before the Coyotes came back for a 16-12 lead. The Coyotes got their final first half score on an over-the-shoulder grab by Kelsey Rozelle on a pass from Noah Nelson as the clock struck zeroes and the Coyotes took a 24-12 advantage into halftime.
Potter-Dix dominated the third quarter of the game with an aggressive offense and a tight defense, scoring twice while never letting South Platte into the end zone. The Coyotes had all the reason in the world to be feeling confident as they ended the third quarter and entered the fourth with a massive 26-point lead on the Blue Knights, the scoreboard reading 38-12.
The Coyotes outscored the Blue Knights 16-8 in the fourth quarter.
Rozelle was the leading rusher with 140 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Noah Nelson added 62 yards rushing in addition to a 9-of-14 passing night for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Rozelle was also the leading pass catcher with five receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown.
Coby Hicks was the leading tackler for the Coyotes, getting seven solo stops and 11 assisted tackles. Keverett Rusk had a team-high four tackles for a loss among his five solo and three assisted tackles on the night.
The win was the first for Potter-Dix this season as the home team improved to 1-6. South Platte fell to 2-4 with the loss.
The Coyotes wrap up their season Friday with a 7 p.m. contest at Leyton.
