The High School Winter Sports Season is off and running. We had a full schedule of events this past week with the Kimball High Wrestlers hosting their own dual with Bayard and then participating in the Akron, Colorado Tournament and they will be at the Banner County Tourney this Saturday with a 9:30 a.m. start time.

Kimball hosted their own four team girls-boys basketball tournament and both Kimball teams played in the championship game with the girls winning and the boys taking runner-up honors. It was a great atmosphere, especially when Kimball and Dundy County-Stratton played as those Tiger fans brought a lot of following. Good for our economy also with that many fans coming to town. Activities Director Ken Smith did a good job of making sure everything was good to go. This weekend the Kimball basketball teams travel to Grant Friday night and are at home with Morrill Saturday. Start time at Grant is 4 p.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday. The Booster Club will be feeding you fans Saturday evening.

The Kimball Junior High girl’s basketball team will host Mitchell this afternoon (Thursday) with a 3 p.m. start, and they travel to Sidney Saturday for their final game with an early 9 a.m. start. Kimball Freshman girls and boys are off to Bridgeport Monday (Dec. 14) for basketball action starting at 5:30 p.m.

Catching you up to date on the junior high girls basketball, they played a make up game at Gering and played only an A-game losing 25-22. Coach Michele Daum was without 4 of her top players. Sydney Biesecker had 8 points, Jenna Greenwood 7, Megan Spicer 6, and Raven Johnson 1.

Against Morrill on the home court the Kimball B-Team won 32-11 with Brooklin Golding scoring 12, Emma Martin 10, Jaydin Paxton 6 and Sierra Rutledge 4. Morrill won the A-Game 35-24 with Biesecker high with 10, Greenwood and Martin with 4 each, Spicer 5, and Johnson 1.

Kimball hosted Bayard this past Monday and won both games. Kimball took the B-Game 20-3 led by Paxton with 10, Golding 8, and Rutledge 2. The A-Team won 24-18 with Spicer high with 10, Greenwood 6, Biesecker 4, and Johnson 2. Bayard was kind and scored a basket for Kimball when a player got mixed up and went to the wrong basket.

Catching you up on former Kimball High athletes playing at the college level. Mike Daum came off the bench to take game scoring honors for his South Dakota State team in an 80-53 win over Wayne State College. The big guy scored 19 points and had 7 rebounds. His Jackrabbits are now 7-1 on the season.

Kendall Ferguson at Hastings College had good outings this past week but the Broncos lost a pair of close contests. Against Doane they lost 89-86 but Ferguson had a solid night scoring 14 points on 5/8 shooting from the field and 1/1 from 3 point range along with 3/3 at the line. He also had 4 rebounds, a block, a steal and an assist.

Hastings lost to Dordt, Iowa 95-92 on Saturday night with Ferguson having a double-double scoring 15 points and pulling 11 rebounds. He was 5/6 on field goals going 2/2 on treys, was 3/4 at the line, had 2 blocks and 1 steal. Our Kendall is certainly doing his share.

Got word that Tori Reader, yet another Kimball grad still involved with the sports she loved, is assistant girl’s basketball coach at Shelton, Nebraska this winter.

Kayli Rageth is coaching at Dakota State after her college playing days were completed last year at Chadron State. And, I hear that Shelby Vogel is a member of the Dakota State Women’s Team. Would like to get more info on how this former Kimball high standout is doing after transferring to Dakota State.

I just got word from local golf pro Chad Wise that Four Winds Golf Course is open, but golfers are warned to stay out of the wet places.
