Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
Top story of the week is a new Kimball high single game scoring record by Danika Daum! The talented senior scored 40 points in leading her Lady Longhorn team to a win over Morrill, and now holds the new record after bettering Alisa Mueller's previous record of 38 set in the 1996-97 season. Of note, she was 18 of 22 at the foul line! Free throws will win ball games and help you set new scoring records as well!
Also of interest, Danika's brother Mike, who is having an outstanding season of his own at South Dakota State University, was watching his little sister on the Kimball Booster Club website, and was talking back and forth with his Mom at the same time.
He was telling Mom "She needs another basket to break my record". Mike holds the Kimball boy's single game record with 41 points, a feat he did twice.
When I went over after the game to give my personal congrats to Danika, there was Mike on his Mom's smart phone waving to me and smiling big as life. He was also congratulating his sis.

Speaking of Mike, he had another big game for South Dakota State this past week scoring 15 points and pulling 2 rebounds in 15 minutes of play. SDS is now 9 and 1. They also registered a 84-70 win over Minnesota where Mike had 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 16 minutes of play.

Talk about outstanding play on the basketball court! Kendall Ferguson had a BIG GAME this past week. The former Kimball High standout played a big role in helping his Hastings College team to an 88-77 win over Morningside, Iowa. Kendall had 18 points going 7/11 from the field and 1/2 on 3 point attempts along with 3/6 at the foul line, and pulled down 21 rebounds, dished out 3 assists, had 2 steals and 4 blocks.
Hastings coach Bill Gavers was high with his praise of Ferguson. In a release from his office Gavers said "Kendall has been a major reason for our success this year. He is a great story. He is a senior who came from the football team and played junior varsity basketball for us last year. A lot of people might say that they wouldn't do that as juniors, but I think he was on a mission to get himself ready for this year: It's paid off. He stuck with it, he persevered and didn't quit when things got hard. That's a great message to all of our players."
Gavers went on to say that towards the end of the game when we needed stops, he was the guy who went up and took the ball away from people. He's been doing that all year.
Because of his outstanding play, Ferguson was named the Great Plains Athletic Conference Player of the Week!

The Kimball junior high girl's basketball team closed out their season this past Saturday at Sidney. The B-Team lost 33-4 with Emma Martin and Brooke Golding scoring Kimball's
two baskets. Sidney won the A-Game 41-12 with Sydney Biescker an Bailie Brower both scoring 3, Megan Spicer, Alyson Holt, and Emma Martin all with 2 points each.
The A team finished up with a 3-5 record and the B team was 4-4.
Coach Michgele Daum said "I am so proud of this young group of girls. They are one of my all time favorite groups I have worked with."
----------------------------------------The Kimball Junior High Wrestlers also wound up their season this past week at the Mitchell Tournament. "We didn't finish the season as strongly as I would have liked to, but this group of young men practiced hard and overcame some obstacles this season. This group was one of the hardest working and easiest to coach group of wrestlers I have had. I believe there will be some success for these young men when they reach the high school level," said coach Klent Schnell.
Final season records: Bradley Lee 8-7, Connor McGinnis 9-8, Zavyer White 9-13, Scott Hunsaker 11-7, Corey Gardner 0-14, Ethan Ratzlaff 11-10, Zander Hottell 2-13, Todd Hunsaker 9-7, Steve Bateman 14-5, Jorge Sotelo 3-6 and Zarek Randles 0-4.
