Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
With our local high school teams idle this past week, and longer, the local sports scene has been quiet for our athletes, coaches, and fans.
Not the case for a couple of our former Kimball High basketball standouts however and I enjoyed catching up on their games this past week and writing about their illustrious accomplishments.
Be sure and read about Kendall Ferguson and Mike Daum in separate stories this week. These two are performing at phenomenal standards!

The local sports scene gets busy this week, and I do mean busy.
Kimball will host the Western Trails Conference Wrestling TODAY (Thursday), with wrestling scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Your chance to see some of the top ranked wrestlers in the state.
Basketball at Sidney this evening (Thursday) for the Kimball High girls and boys with JV game times set for 4 p.m. followed by girl’s varsity at 5:30 and varsity boys after that. Friday night more basketball at Mitchell for the Kimball teams with girl’s JV tipping off at 3 p.m. followed in order by boy’s JV, girl’s varsity, and boy’s varsity.
Saturday the Kimball wrestlers are off to Oshkosh for the Garden County Tournament starting at 9 a.m. The basketball teams are at home hosting Chase County with JV game times at 2 p.m., girl’s varsity at 3:30 and boy’s varsity at 5 p.m.
Also, Saturday evening, the Booster Club will be feeding you fans with their popular Walking Tacos, and the sophomore class will be having a cake raffle. In case you missed the call, the freshman basketball shown on the schedule for Monday evening in Torrington, was moved up to this past Monday and played at Kimball. There is more Kimball High basketball this coming Tuesday however at Potter Dix starting at 4 p.m. for the
JV girls and followed in order by boy’s JV, girl’s varsity, and boy’s varsity. The conditioning of the Kimball High basketball players will be tested for certain this week!

The Kimball freshman basketball teams got the New Year off to a good start with both the girls and boys winning games with Torrington this past Monday evening. This was a change in the schedule moving games from January 11 at Torrington to January 4 at Kimball.
The Kimball girls won over Torrington 46-33 with Kate Reader scorIng 26 for Kimball. Lacey Klinkhammer had 8, Madison Wynne 6, Kaylyn Nelson 4, and Lila Moore 2. Nice to see Maddison Wynne back after recovering from a severe ankle sprain suffered before Christmas break.
The Kimball boys trailed Torrington through three quarters of play but came from behind to win 51-47 in an exciting contest. They were down 8-6 at the quarter break, trailed 22-14 at half time, and closed to 35-31 after three quarters, then out scored the visitors 20-12 in the final period for the win.
Izaac Reuter was high for Kimball with 19 points, Corey Travis had 12, Colton Mielke 9, Grant Hickman 5, Brady Kilgore 4, and Grant Golding 2. There is some basketball talent in this freshman class and the future looks promising.
