Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
With four upperclassmen scoring in the double digits, the Potter-Dix Coyotes squeaked past the Bayard Tigers 59-50 in their first home conference game following a two-week break on Jan. 8.
The Coyotes closed the first quarter barely ahead, 11-10 but quickly added fifteen before half-time while holding their opponents to 10 and 13.
Coming back from half-time the Potter-Dix boys tallied an additional 18 points and allowed the Tigers eleven.
In the final quarter the Tigers rallied, scoring 16 and holding the home team to 15 for their most successful quarter but it wasn’t enough to take the game.
Senior Coby Hicks led the Coyotes with 15 points, making six of 10 field goals and added three points from the line.
Fellow senior, Sam Bogert added 12 points, making five of six attempted two-pointers and nailing both attempted free throws.
Tying Bogerts 12 points, junior Edward Barnes hit two of six attempted two-pointers and landed two treys. Barnes finished up with two good from the line.
Senior Cole Christensen rounded out the top-scoring Coyotes with ten points to his credit with two successful two-point shots, a trey and three free throws.
Kelsey Rozelle added four points to the board while Noah Nelson and Connor Williams each contributed three.
Defensively, the Potter-Dix boys racked up a total of 30 rebounds, 10 offensive and 20 defensive, with Rozelle and Christensen leading with a total seven each. Bogert grabbed six and Barnes five.
Rozelle contributed seven assists, one block, and two steals with Christensen and Bogert each adding three assists and Nelson followed with a second block, two rebounds and one assist.
Turnovers were kept to a minimum with sixteen and the team racked up a total of eighteen fouls on their way to the win.

Potter-Dix followed followed up a home win against Bayard with a second, even closer win against South Platte at Big Springs on Jan. 9.
The Coyotes began the game leading the Blue Knights and did not let up, scoring 11 in the first quarter to South Platte’s six and adding 13 in the second quarter but allowing just seven for their hosts.
Coming back from half-time the Potter-Dix boys seemed to let their guard down a bit and nearly gave the third quarter away with a score of 16 to South Platte’s 15.
The Blue Knights rallied in the fourth, adding 20 huge points to the board and keeping the Coyotes to just nine, but the effort was just not enough and the game ended with the Coyotes ahead 49-48.
Leading the Potter-Dix boys in their battle was junior Noah Nelson with a total of 14 points on the board. Nelson shot five for nine two-point field goals, nailed two of five attempted treys and landed both attempts from the line.
Cole Christensen added 11 to the board with one trey and four two-point field goals, followed by Coby Hicks with eight, Kelsey Rozelle with seven, Edward Barnes with five and Sam Bogert with four.
Rozelle contributed seven rebounds, two assists and a steal while Christensen added another seven rebounds, five blocks, three assists and one steal.
Hicks grabbed six rebounds, two assists, one steal and two blocked shots and Bogert and Barnes each pulled down five rebounds.
Turnovers were higher, with a total of 25 for the Coyotes and the team totaled 16 personal fouls.
