Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
Class B golf powerhouse Scottsbluff was too strong for the Kimball High boy's golf team this past week but the Longhorns gave the bigger school a run at the team honors of the Mitchell Invite. The Bluffs team took top team honors with their score of 313 while Kimball finished runnerup with 321. Behind the leaders were Gering 335, Sidney JV 346, Alliance 357, Crawford 366, Chadron 371, Mitchell 392, Garden County 393, Morrill 419 and Mitchell JV
457.
Scottsbluff also took the top two individual spots with Jared Pilkington medalist with his round of 71. Jonah Wright got second place with his round of 72 in a score card playoff win over Kimball's Jordan Greenwood who also shot an even par round of 72 with nine hole scores of 34-38=72. In three times out so far this season, Greenwood, a junior, has two wins to his credit and was a bit disappointed with his finish at Mitchell.
"I bogeyed the last hole which cost me a chance at winning," he said.
Zane Anthony, shown at left, had his best day yet in his high school career as the young freshman shot 38-38=76 for a fourth place finish, and freshman team mate Dillon Wise finished ninth in the top ten medal group with his round of 45-38=83, and accomplished this despite five out of bounds penalties! Anthony's round showed him with four three-putts for four bogeys and the rest were all pars!
This young team can play some golf and can put up some good numbers despite encountering difficulties. Their best is yet to come according to coach Chad Wise. All five Kimball golfers were under 100 once again with Izaac Reuter shooting 48-42=90, and Kole Bush 50-44=94 and both improving their scores on the back nine of their play.
"Losing to Scottsbluff by just eight strokes isn't too bad I guess," said coach Chad Wise, "but it would have been a feather in our caps if we could have beat them."
Remember Coach Wise's pre-season quote "We are here to win."
