James C. “Whitey” Westby, 76, of Kimball, died at his home in Kimball on Sunday April 24, 2016. Cremation has been held and a gathering of family and friends will be held at the Kimball 4-H Building on Thursday from Noon until 3:00 p.m. Following the gathering at the 4-H Building there will be a gathering at Beer & Loathing at 3:00 p.m. Memorials have been established to the family. Friends may visit http://www.cantrellfh.com to leave condolences and messages for the family. The cremation services have been entrusted to the Cantrell Funeral Home.
James Carl Westby was born in Huron, South Dakota on May 16, 1939, the son of Thomas and Ferne (Bales) Westby. He attended school in Huron, South Dakota. Whitey was married to Karol Manning in 1962 and to this union a daughter Karla was born. Whitey and Karol later divorced. He moved to Kimball in 1966. He was married to Alice Thomason in 1967 and to this union Jim was born. Whitey also adopted Alice’s children Lora, Angie and Ernie. Whitey worked for J/M Trucking and later Evertson Well Service as a truck driver. He worked for H.M. Vowers Farms for a short time before going back to driving a truck for Evertson”s. He later worked for Vrtatko Farms and Lukassen Farms.
Survivors include his children Lora (Junior) Tuzicka, Angela (Scott) Harding, Ernie Westby, James (Gretchen) Westby, Jr., Karla Westby; step sons Albert (Liz) Thomason, Billie (Diane) Thomason; 18 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; sister Jean, brothers Doyle, Curtis, Carroll, Clair and Dallas. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Alice, sister Linda and brothers Merlyn, Myron, Warren and Jerry.
