A total number of 440 students competed in the West River Math Contest that was held at the South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City on May 9.
Fourteen students from Kimball High School competed in the math contest, with Nicholas Thomas-Lewis placing first and Ryan Soper placed fifth, in the Algebra 2 Division.
"Contests like this give students an opportunity to meet other like-minded students and helps reinforce concepts we are teaching in the classroom," stated Kimball Math Instructor, Danielle Reader, "It also gives students an opportunity to visit a college campus as well as other sights in the area that they may not otherwise see. If they score high enough, they may even be on the radar of the college that hosts the contest, increasing their opportunity for scholarship opportunities in the future."
"Our students did very well," Reader added.
While the students were there for the competition, they also were able to visit Evans Plunge and the Wind Caves in Hot Springs, South Dakota, as well as visit Mount Rushmore.
