Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
After a 4-0 start the Kimball High boys basketball team suffered back-to-back losses this past week losing to Sidney at home on Thursday evening 62-21 and losing on the road to Chase County Saturday 65-33.
In the loss to class B Sidney, it was a case of the Raiders getting off to a big start as their shots were falling while the Horns could not get a shot to fall. The Raiders broke out to a 15-0 start, led 22-4 at the quarter break, was up 44-9 by half time and cruised to the easy victory. Kimball was without starter Brandon Barker as the senior guard was home with a case of the flu. Reserve Grant Hickman suffered a knee injury during warmup of the JV game and was also side-lined for the varsity contest. It was the first competition for Kimball since their December 10 win at Morrill while Sidney had played five times in that same time frame.
Jordan Greenwood was getting his good looks at the basket but time after time his shots were rimming out and just missing. The talented senior guard came into the game averaging over 25 points but was the Horn's lone scorer in double figures with 11. A bright note was his 3 for 3 performance at the foul line. Seth Krafczik got his first action of the season and nailed Kimball's only three point fielder to account for his three points. Brady Kilgore finished with three while Jaden Withrow and Izaak Reuter both had two points. Reuter also led the team in rebounds with seven and steals with two along with a block.
Ed Barnes also charted a blocked shot.
Kimball team stats were also dismal as they were 8/45 shooting from the field for 18 percent including 1/15 on three point attempts for 7 percent, but shot 4/5 at the line. They had 19 rebounds, three blocks, four steals and ten turnovers plus 13 fouls.
Sidney had 11 players score led by Jon Smith with 13 including two treys and Jake Burke with 11. Smith, a 5'8" junior point guard is the son of Brenda (Schadegg) Smith, who played her high school sports for Kimball High.
Sidney 22 22 11 7 – 62
Kimball 4 5 5 7 – 21
Sidney also won the boy's JV game 71-34 with Cal Bosard high for the winners with 16, Alec Maddox had 14 and Connor Dormann 13. Scoring for Kimball were Zane Anthony and Brendan Walker with six each as both nailed two treys, Brayden Tyan five, Kilgore four, Reuter four, Kole Bush, five, Jaren Winstrom two and Corey Travis two.
Another tough night at Imperial against a highly touted Chase County club. The Horns hung tough the first period and trailed 16-13 at the quarter break and trailed 33-20 at half time. The home town Longhorns pulled away in the second half to secure the win. Kimball shot the ball better at Imperial but was only 6/31 on three point tries and ended up at 25 percent from the field and were ¾ at the foul line. Withrow hit double figures for the Horns with 12 points and nailed two treys and was 2/2 at the line. Colton Mielke also hit a pair of treys and finished with eight points, Greenwood was held to five with one trey. Barker had three, Krafczik three with a trey and Reuter two. Reuter was also top rebounder with three and Barker led in steals with three. Kimball had seven turnovers and 13 fouls.
Chase County 16 17 22 10 – 65
Kimball 13 7 10 3 – 33
Chase County won the JV game 62-42. Bush led Kimball with eight points backed by Walker and Tyan with seven each, Kilgore five, Mielke and Hickman four each, Beau Hanks and Travis three each and Thomas Lenzen one.
