Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
There is so much I want to say about last Friday’s Inauguration of Donald J. Trump as our 45th President of the United States, and yet so much has already been said that I find it might be easier to attempt a lengthy commentary on the less tumultuous concepts of time and space.
The whole thing has me in quite a conundrum actually. I am a female supporter of Trump, and yet, as many of you who truly know me know, that being a reporter is only my day job and that there is a lot more to me than meets the eye, or the page, I should say.
Because of who I am, what I am capable of and the jobs I’ve held in the past, I’ve met hundreds of people from all over the country who are firmly on the opposite side of my own political views. Not only have I lost friends in the past year due to my political views, but I often get Facebook or IM from people outside of Nebraska who are confused by my firm support of our President.
I was invited by several friends around the country to join the women’s march on January 21st. I will tell you what I told them, “Sorry, although I consider myself a hippie patriot, I’m definitely more Patriot than hippie and I’m actually less of a feminist than my clothes suggest.” I was answered with silence. Well, at least no one threw stones at me, verbally of course.
I truly believe that time will eventually prove that none of this really matters in the whole scheme of the universe. There are so many more important things that we, as humans, should be worried about, for example, our souls.
No matter what side you are on, you are still on a side. We’ve become a race where it is more important to be a “winner” than to do what, I believe, we are actually supposed to be doing here on earth - finding our joy, learning to love and being compassionate to one another.
I believe we’ve lost our way, became so engrossed in the material, the superficial, who wins and who loses, that we’ve forgotten what real happiness is. Time has marched on and colored our world view in with black, white and grey. What happened to all the colors of happiness, joy, love and elation? For me those are found in the colors of a Nebraska sunset.
Maybe we, as a country, have lost our direction because not everyone has seen a Nebraska sunset. For those of us here, who have the opportunity to see them almost nightly, don’t you agree that a western Nebraska sunset brings a sense of peace and serenity that just isn’t found anywhere else?
What if we could package that feeling and share it with the rest of the country, or even the whole world! What amazing things could be accomplished when done with love, peace and serenity.
Then again, if we were to package those, someone would want to benefit financially from it, then perhaps the DEA and FDA would want to label it as an illegal substance and we’d be banned from its use.
So, let’s just all go out and watch a beautiful western Nebraska sunset tonight and take in the serenity for free... while it’s still legal.
