Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
It takes awhile to narrow down the top 30 spellers in grades four through eight at Kimball schools, but the annual Kimball Spelling Bee finally did just that.
Each of the five grades were represented by the six top spellers who gathered on stage in the Harry E. McNees Auditorium on Thursday, Feb. 16 immediately following classes.
All of these students made it through the first round of the Bee and the competition became increasingly difficult as enunciator Kathleen O'Brien moved down the spelling list.
With the words cavalcade and tenaciously tripping up top contenders, soon the stage held just two students, David Selves, the top speller in seventh grade and Lydia Travis, the top speller in sixth grade and last year's champion.
Travis approached the microphone and was given the word scrumptiously. She stumbled on the proper spelling, and Selves followed up with the correct spelling of the word.
He was then given the word neutron for the win but he failed to offer the correct spelling, transposing the letter e and u.
Travis spelled it correctly and followed up with the correct spelling of the word catastrophic for her second Spelling Bee win in a row.
O'Brien, joined by judges Jo Dietz, Linda Mihm and Carolyn Montgomery, congratulated all of the contestants and awarded Travis and Selves their trophies.
