Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

The spring sports schedule is in full swing and the Kimball High golf team finally got some action. They were at the Mitchell Tournament this past Tuesday and because of our early deadline for printing, we will have the story on this action in next week’s sports, along with the results of the Bridgeport Tournament being held today, April 13. This is a 9 a.m. start time if you want to take in the action. Next Tuesday, April 18, they will be at the Morrill Tournament with another 9 a.m. start time.

Track action today, Thursday, April 13, with Mitchell hosting the Western Trails Conference Track Meet. Some of the state’s top track athletes in action at Mitchell and you track and field enthusiasts will enjoy this one, especially with a good weather forecast!

Another attraction to remember is Mike Daum making an appearance at the Kimball Manor tomorrow, Friday, at 1:30. Mike will talk about his experiences of this past season as the spark plug for his South Dakota State University Men’s Basketball Team. What a season for Big Mike and he is coming home for the weekend and is kind enough to share some stories with all of us. Everyone is welcome to attend and bring cameras and take pictures. The time, again, is 1:30 p.m.

Danika Daum, Mike’s younger sister, is going to be making a change in her athletic and scholastic endeavors, and is moving farther south to continue her volleyball. We will have all the details for you next week complete with a signing picture.

Pat O’Brien, who heads up the Four winds Men’s Monday-Tuesday golf league, has asked me to inform anyone interested in playing this year to contact either him at 235-5009 or Four Winds Pro Chad Wise at the Pro Shop. The first week of league play will begin June 5 – 6. If interested and you need a partner, contact Pat or Chad and they will try to team you up. Also of interest, the Hole-in-One prize money this season is up close to $1,500. Does this whet your interest? A combined scramble with the Thursday Men’s League will get the season underway on May 7.

Also, any golfers, male or female, not in a league and desiring to have a GHIN handicap, you need to let Pat or Chad know by May 10. Cost is $18 for adults and $10 for anyone 18 or younger.

This is looking down the road a ways, but you can put this on your golfing calendars. The TeamMates Mentoring Chapter’s Annual golf tournament at the Four Winds is set for June 24 this summer. Always a great time for a worthy cause.
