Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
Still a lot of golf being played in our area and it is going to get even busier now that the Kimball High girls opened up their season this past Tuesday and have a total of four tournaments in August alone. Today, Thursday, the Kimball High ladies are at Bayard and next Tuesday, August 29, they will host their own tournament. August 31, they go to the Creek Valley Tournament. Make note that on the 29th, the Four Winds course will be closed to open golf until 2:30 p.m.
Coach Katie Culek has six girls on her golf team, at least at the time of this writing, and she has increased interest from just a year ago. It is a great opportunity for girls to learn a lifetime sport and get free lessons while learning.

More good news to report from the golfing Greenwood family. Jordan Greenwood and his father Kenny, played in the Gering Open this past weekend and both finished in the money with Jordan finishing in third place with his two-day rounds of 72-70=142, and Kenny finishing fifth with 75-73=148. Now Jordan is ready to head for Beatrice where he will begin his college education. He has already been outfitted with a Southeast golf bag and it looked pretty sharp when I saw him practicing at the Four Winds this past week.

Henry Heeg Jr. has already headed west back to California to continue his college schooling and his college golf career, and we hope to get reports on how he is doing, so that we can share with you readers.

Payton Wise and Cole Henton both performed at the second level of competition in the Masters Drive-Chip-Putt contest held at the Walnut Creek Golf Preserve in Denver this past weekend. Payton, who is beginning her eighth grade of school at Kimball Junior High, finished fifth scoring 99 points. She was second in the driving division out of 16 girls. Cole, a freshman at Kimball High this fall, scored 80 points and was seventh out of the 16 boys who had advanced to this level and was third in the putting.

Along with all of the golf news, I can also give you some of the Kimball High Fall Sports schedule. The KHS football team held a scrimmage this past Thursday evening and I counted 23 players in uniform. The passing game looked pretty sharp with people catching some on-target throws from Izaac Reuter.
The Horns will open the season tonight, Thursday, at North Platte High School playing Centura with a 6 p.m. Kimball time kickoff. I understand that KSID Radio is broadcasting this game and the City Link will probably also cover the game.
The Kimball High Cross Country team opens the season at Scottsbluff this afternoon, Thursday, with a 4:45 start time. Coach Tiffany Johnson told me she has about a dozen runners out this season.
The volleyball team will hold a scrimmage tomorrow evening, Friday August 25, at 6 p.m. at the Kimball High School . Their first competition is August 31, hosting Bridgeport.
