Banner ladies split week, take MAC tourney loss to Bayard

The Banner County Lady Cats traveled to Minatare on Jan. 13 and brought home a 55-34 win against the Lady Indians.

Banner County led in the first quarter 10-6 and widened their lead in the second by 16 while keeping their opponents to 10, closing out the first half 26-16.

The Lady Indians came back from intermission refreshed and ready to play, scoring highest in the third quarter, with 12, but the Banner County club added 14 to the board in the same quarter. In the final quarter of play the Lady Cats added 15 more points and held their opponents to just six, handily earning them the win.

Coach Chad Miller said, “Everyone had a great game.”

Courtney Knisley led the team in steals with 11 and assists with eight while getting nine points, landing three of 10 field goal attempts and 50 percent of her free throw shots. She also pulled six rebounds for the Lady Cats.

MaKenna Dahlgrin, once again, had a double double with her 20 points and 18 rebounds as well as five blocks, five steals and three assists. She shot ½ from beyond the arc, 7/17 in the field and 3/10 from the line.

Jadyn Cross hit three treys in the first half on her way to 14 points. She added four assists and six rebounds.

Emily Singleton added six points to the Banner County board.

“She (Singleton) opened up her teammates with some great screens,” Miller said.

Rylie Mason got in on the scoring with four points and pulled six rebounds and Cheyanne Knisley added points as well.

“Cheyanne also had a key defensive play drawing a charge in the second quarter and getting her teammates a boost. She also had some key screens in the game to give her teammates good looks at the basket,” Miller said. “All the girls worked very hard for this win.”

Miller hoped that his team could keep their momentum going into the conference tournament the following Tuesday but the Banner club took a 50-29 loss against Bayard on Jan. 16 in MAC tournament play and had just three players score in the game.

The Bayard ladies outscored the Lady Cats 3-1 in the first quarter and though the Banner ladies surged in the second quarter, adding eight to their board, the Lady Tigers kept them at bay, closing the first half with an 18-12 lead.

Coming back from half time the Lady Tigers built on their lead with 18 points added to the board in the third quarter and kept the Banner ladies to just seven.

In the final quarter of play the Lady Cats added 11 to the board but were not able to catch up to the Tigers, who widened their lead by two with 13 points in the final quarter, securing the 50-29 win.

Scoring for the Lady Cats was led by Dahlgrin with 18 points to her credit, landing 6/14 from the fieldand shooting 6/11 from the line.

Cross added nine points with one trey and 3/6 in the field and Courtney Knisley added two points from the line.

Dahlgrin added another double double with 13 rebounds. She also charted one block, one assist and one steal with just two turnovers.

Mason followed with six rebounds, while Singleton, Cross and Courtney Knisley each pulled four rebounds.

The Banner ladies played Guernsey-Sunrise on Tuesday, Jan. 23 one the road. Further information was not available at press time. They will be in action again on Saturday, Jan. 27 at Morrill with a 3 p.m. start time.
