Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
The Kimball High Track Team ended
up with 3 State Track qualifiers,
in 4 events, from the Class C-9 District
Meet held at Sutherland this past
Thursday. Brady Kilgore, a junior,
qualified in 2 events winning the boy's
high jump at 5'10" and running 2nd in
the 110 meter high hurdles in 15.08,
nipped at the finish line by McKade
Smith of Hershey, who was timed at
15.05. Brady will be making his third
consecutive trip to the State Meet
and after just missing out on a medal
his freshman year, brought home 5th
place last season. Hannah Biesecker,
a senior, is also going to Omaha for
her third straight year after finishing
2nd at the District meet in the long
jump. The talented jumper wasted no
time making sure she was going to the
Big Show by going past the automatic
qualifying mark of 15'9" for Class C
with her 16'4" jump on her very first
attempt in the prelims. She ended up
improving that mark to 16'8", which
was 2nd only to the winning mark of
17'8.5" by Bailee Fear of Sutherland.
Coach Gene Mohr had to wait until
the following day to learn that he had
yet another state qualifier when it was
announced that senior, Kaden Adrian,
had also made the list with an additional
fastest time from all districts in
the boy's 800 meter run. Kaden finished
5th at Sutherland with his time
of 2:04.59, but the fast times at the
C-9 District will send 5 runners to the
State meet, rather than just the usual
top 2 individual places!
Kimball finished 8th in both the
girls and boys team points at Sutherland,
scoring 30 points in the boys
division and 26 in the girls division.
Chase County won both divisions
with their talented track squad. They
ran away from everyone in the boys
division, scoring 143 points with
Mitchell a distant 2nd with 76. It
was closer in the girls division, where
Chase County scored 147 and Mitchell
was runner-up with 118. There
were 10 schools involved.
Other highlights on the day for
Kimball saw Biesecker take home
the 8th place medal in the 100 meter
dash, with her time of 13.49 and also
ran a leg on the 3rd place 4x100 relay
team, joining up with Sam Bemis,
Jenna Greenwood and Megan Spicer
to run a time of 53.11. Spicer was
close to qualifying in the long jump as
the freshman finished 4th with a leap
of 15'6.75", just shy of the automatic
mark of 15'9". Kimball got 3 medals
in the triple jump with Bemis 5th
at 32'9.25", Spicer 7th at 32'4" and
Greenwood 8th at 31'11.25". Greenwood
also placed 5th in the high jump
at 4'6" and Bemis was 4th in the pole
vault with a PR of 8'10". Carli Wurdeman
was 8th in the discus throw of
94'7".
Additional highlights for the Kimball
boys saw Beau Hanks place 4th
in the triple jump, getting out past
the 40 feet mark at 40'1/2". Paycen
Harroun came close to the automatic
mark of qualifying in the pole vault
clearing 13'9", but not quite making
the needed 13'4". On the vault where
he cleared 13', he clearly would have
made the 13'4" mark, and maybe
even the 13'6" mark he was after all
season, which would equal the school
record. There were 4 vaulters at 14'
or better at Sutherland with the winning
height at 14'8".
Kimball had two relay teams place
with the 4x100 relay team finishing
5th with a time of 46.80. Team
members were Brayden Tyan, Byron
Rowley, Christian Allen-Van Pelt
and Brady Kilgore. The 4x800 relay
team of Zachery Wagner, Stephen
Bateman, Sam Cajero and Nicholas
Thomas-Lewis also ran 5th their time
of 9:29.93.
The 2018 Nebraska State Track
Meet will take place this Friday-Saturday,
May 18-19, at Omaha's Burke
Stadium.
