Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
The Kimball High Boy’s Golf Team has put another outstanding season in the books with a lot of good memories for Coach Chad Wise and his team. The Longhorns recorded team championships, 2 runner-up finishes and a 4th place State Tournament. They defended and repeated as conference champions in both the Western Conference and SPVA conferences and won the District Tournament.
A positive is that four members of this year’s team will return, but a negative is they will graduate two members and they will miss the play of seniors Kole Bush and Andrew McCloud. From this year’s junior class, Dillon Wise, Zane Anthony and Izaac Reuter, will return and they have been varsity the past 3 seasons and are seasoned veterans for certain. Also back with the varsity play is underclassman, Brendan Walker, who is ready to assume a varsity spot full-time.
The Horns started the season with a four-team practice round at Gering with no team scores kept. It was just 9 holes, but the Horns would have won as Wise was medalist with 36, Anthony was 2nd with 38 and Reuter was 7th with 43. Kimball played 8 golfers. Kimball won at Mitchell with a 323 score, won at Bridgeport with 317, won at Morrill with 322, was 2nd at Chase County with 370, won at Scottsbluff with 358, won the SPVA at North Platte with 333, won WTC at Morrill with 329, won the Kimball Invite with 322, was 2nd at Bayard with 323, and shot their low score of the year at the District held in Kimball with a 309. At State, they shot rounds of 321 and 334 to finish 4th, moving up from 6th the first day.
Looking at individual stats, Wise averaged 79 for the season with his low round of 72 shot the second day of state. He had 3 wins, 4 runner-ups, 2 thirds, 1 fourth and 1 fifth, plus his tie for 11th at State, giving him a medal in every tournament of the year. Anthony averaged 82.25 for his 12 rounds, with a best round of 73, which won the Bridgeport Tournament. He also had 3 runner-up finishes and took home 11 medals. McCloud averaged 84, with a best round of 78 shot at State. He earned 9 medals, including a tie for 11th at the State tournament. Reuter averaged 87 for the season, with a best round of 81 and also earned 9 medals total. Bush averaged 85 per round on the 10 events he was involved in, with a best round of 78 and earned 4 medals. Walker played in 6 tournaments and averaged 89, with a best round of 84 and earned 3 medals.
It was truly another solid season for the Kimball boys and with what they have returning, we can look for at last one more really solid year before we lose next year’s senior crew. The Horns have been filling the trophy case with their rewards the past few years and is currently Kimball High’s most productive sport offered. Congrats on the season and we look forward to reporting your golf exploits this summer during the off-season.
