Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
This writing is in response to the John and Suny Moore ‘Letter to the Editor’ dated June 7, 2018. I feel that there should be clarification regarding the directing of the program this year, as opposed to all the prior years. First of all, it was not a VFW Service. It was a county program, planned and directed by a county employee, our Veteran’s Service Officer. In years past, the program has been organized and directed by the Veterans of Foreign War and the Auxiliary. The Memorial Day Services we presented were not meant to be for entertainment purposes, or a stage show. They were solemn and serious fore remembrance for those of us who have witnessed death, destruction and sacrifice - something you would not want to see. It is not like someone who was fortunate enough to have the security and all of the comforts of life due to stateside duty.
As a current VFW member for better than 50 years, and having been involved with our local VFW Post #2243, as has my family, I took offense to the criticism set forth in this letter to myself, all members of our post #2243, and the Auxiliary, as we were all involved in the planning and directing of all previous services. I do not understand how some people came to that deduction. I would hope it is simply that they do not realize the actual entities involved, and what they represent. I would like to once again stress that this is in no way something that should be viewed as entertainment, but for what it really is - gratitude and remembrance.
