Bob and Shirley Gaston have been selected the 2018 Potter Days Grand Marshals. Potter Days festivities are August 31 and September 1 and 2.
Bob was born in Sidney, and attended Potter Public Schools, graduating in 1974. He attended Western Nebraska Technical College and received an Associate of Applied Arts Degree in Auto Mechanics Technology.
He worked in partnership with his dad at Bud's Texaco and he and Shirley later became owners.
He then worked at Nebraskaland Tire and for the last 11 years, Bob has been employed at 21st Century Equipment in Sidney.
Bob was locally active in the Potter Volunteer Fire Department, Potter Youth Center Board, Sons of the Legion, Boy Scouts, Lions Club and a member of the Village Board, serving as mayor for three years.
Shirley was born in Emporia, Kansas, she graduated from Woodland Park High School in Colorado and worked at Pike's Peak Summit House.
She attended Northeastern Junior College in Sterling CO, after receiving an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Mid-Marketing Management, she moved to Sidney. Bob and Shirley were married in 1979.
Shirley was a member of the Potter Volunteer Fire Department, serving as an EMT for three years, Potter Housing Committee, Potter-Dix Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club. Both Bob and Shirley were very active in the Nebraska Jaycees.
The Gaston's are among the many volunteers that have made Potter Days the success it has been.
Bob served on the barbecue committee for ten years and Shirley was a member of the Steering Committee for ten years. They both have spent many hours in the Youth Center Stand, cooking and serving hamburgers.
Bob and Shirley are the parents of two sons, Ross of Potter and Barry and wife, Julie, of Sidney and one grandson, Rubin.
