Lady Coyotes take second at Mitchell

The Mitchell Lady Tigers held a Triangular Tournament last Thursday September 6 between the Kimball Lady Longhorns and the Potter-Dix Lady Coyotes.

Mitchell came out on top beating both Kimball and Potter-Dix, in just two sets in both games. Kimball lost to the Lady Tigers 25-7 in the first set, and 25-6 in the second set.

Kimball however lost to Potter-Dix as well in a three set match, the Lady Horns won the first set 25-14 but lost the next two 25-22 and 25-21.

For the Lady Coyotes is was Senior CC (Ciera) George leading the way with a monster 16 kills in the match against Kimball followed by Kelsey Hoffman with eight, Hannah Stahl with seven Erica Bogert with six, Brooke Moench with three and Genny Herboldsheimer with one.

Blocking was led by Kelsey Hoffman with eight, Bogert with four, and George and Stahl with one each.

Moench led the team with 31 digs for the match, followed by Hoffman and Stahl with 22, Herboldsheimer with 19, George with 17 Bogert with seven and Makayla Merz with 6.

“We rallied after losing the first set 14-25 and we took the final two. We had excellent serving and net play from Kelsey Hoffman and Hannah led the way,” said Michelman.

With George and Herboldsheimer’s several outstanding digs from the back row during this game this gave Moench and Makayla Williamson the chance to each reach double digits in the assist category for the Coyotes to take the win in three sets.

Potter-Dix JV lost to both Mitchell and Kimball’s JV teams 7-25, 11-25 finished up the Mitchell match, and Kimball took the two set win 14-25 and 18-25.

In a hard fought battle with Mitchell it was George with a total of four kills, followed by Bogert with three, Mikayla Lee and Stahl with two, and Kendal Nielsen, Herboldsheimer and Moench with one each.

On the defensive end it was again George on top of the digs category with 14 followed by Moench with 13, Herboldsheimer had 10, Stahl with eight, Nielsen with six, Bogert with four, Merz with three and Mikayla Lee with one.

“Mitchell’s size and power intimidated us a little bit and we struggled to get things going,” said coach Michelman.

“Mikayla Lee played well at the net opposite the Tiger’s 6’3” hitter.”

Mitchell also took the win over the Lady Coyotes with a two set win, 25-7 in the first and 25-7 in the second.

This past weekend the Lady Coyotes traveled to Bridgeport for a triangular tournament and faced off with Mitchell and Bridgeport for the day.

“We played Mitchell tougher this round but still lost in two matches 8-25 and 21-25. We were trailing in the second set but with Hannah’s serving and hustle on defensed we closed the gap to 12-24 be for a tremendous hit from Mitchell to end the game.”

“Another highlight was an amazing kick save from Brooke that brought the crowd from both teams to their feet.”

The second game of the day was with Bridgeport where Michelman says the girls were very competitive in both sets but ended up losing 14-25 and 18-25.

Freshman Kendal Neilsen and Aryana George were able to get some Varsity court time during this game.

Potter Dix will host Wallace at home Tuesday September 18.
