The girls and boys basketball teams start tomorrow (Friday) at home, in their annual four school tournament which involves Dundy County, Potter-Dix, and Morrill. The Potter-Dix girls get it all going with their game with Dundy County at 3 p.m. followed by the boys game between these two schools at 4:30. At 6 p.m. it is the Kimball-Morrill girls and at 7:30 the Kimball-Morrill boys. Play continues on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.

I hope you fans got word that the games between Kimball and Gering scheduled for this past Monday were cancelled due to lack of players for Kimball due to disciplinary infractions on the part of a number of Kimball athletes. In fact, Kimball will be short handed for the first four games of the season, including this weekend’s Kimball Tournament, as they wait out the required number of activities the rules call for. Hopefully a lesson learned and one that won’t occur again.

Now on to more cheerful news. Mike Daum had a big game for South Dakota State University in their win over UTSA with a final score of 99-79. Big Mike scored 41 points and had 10 rebounds and 4 assists and in so doing set a new South Dakota State career scoring record with 2,388 points to move past the old record of 2,363 and he has the entire season left to add to this record!
This former Kimball High standout and two-time Summit League Player of the Year, moved into third on the League scoring chart trailing the leader, Caleb Green of Oral Roberts who set the record of 2,504 points in 2003-07.

In looking a bit farther ahead at the area sports schedule involving Kimball, the High School wrestlers are at the Akron, Colorado Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 1, with action starting at 9:30 a.m.

Always nice to hear from former athletes I have had the pleasure of knowing and writing about through the years and this past week I got an E-mail from Bob McCarty, an outstanding football player from those great teams of the mid-1960 era. Bob sent his greetings from Anchor Point, Alaska. Thanks for the “Shout Out”, Bob, and wishing you the best. You were one of the Best!
