Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
She has put in 40 years of work for Kimball County and is so close to retirement she can almost taste it. Dec. 31 will be Diana Quicke's official last day as Kimball County treasurer.
Beginning her county career in the Road Department, Diana drove a packer while she helped build roads. She surveyed as well as help with secretarial work until she was asked to join the treasurer's office.
Diana worked as a deputy under Arthur J. Johnson until she took his place as treasurer. This year makes 31 years in the treasurer position for her.
Throughout the years, Diana has had many memorable experiences but two that stand out from back in the late 1990s.
In 1998, Diana served as president of the Nebraska Association of Treasurers. She served as an officer with the group before being elected to the position.
As an officer, she attend two official conventions to represent Nebraska treasurers nationally. One convention was in Baltimore and the other in Oregon. And in 1999, Diana was voted Outstanding Nebraska Treasure.
Married to her husband Paul for 39 years, she has six kids and 11 foster kids, two of whom she adopted. Life has been very busy for Diana over the years.
"I haven't had free time, so I don't know what I will do with it all," Diana said.
"All my friends tell me I will be busier than I am now. I look forward to that," she added.
Cindy Rahmig, currently Diana's deputy, will take the reins come January.
Diana noted that Rahmig has been deputy for 28 years and will do a great job for the county.
"I will miss everyone who comes into the office," she said. "I love seeing people daily, and of course I will miss my staff very much as well."
As for her plans for retirement, Diana said she doesn't have many yet, but she and Paul will enjoy the time off.
"Paul has a few years left to retirement, but we will be enjoying the time off in South Dakota and out four-wheeling," Diana said.
A retirement party will be held for Diana on Wednesday, Dec. 19 from 2-4 p.m. at the Kimball County Courthouse.
