Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

A good weekend for Kimball High athletes and their respective teams. The Kimball High girls won both of their games against Perkins County and Morrill and are now 3-1.The boys split their weekend losing to Perkins County after leading until late in the 4th period, but went to Morrill and avenged an earlier loss at Kimball to the Lions. The wrestlers saw their own Kimball Tournament cancelled due to a number of teams dropping out, but coach Brashear took 3 wrestlers to Cheyenne and they came home with 2 2nds and a 1st place.

Kimball High Activities Director, Ken Smith, said he had 11 teams signed up but they started dropping like mad and was down to just 2 teams who were coming, and a total of 24 wrestlers when he called it off.

This weekend’s Kimball High sporting schedule before they break for Christmas has the basketball teams playing on the home court both nights.Action on Friday evening with Hershey coming to town will begin at 3:30 for the JV contests followed by girls varsity at 4 and boys varsity at 6:30.Saturday evening Bayard comes to Kimball for JV games at 2 and girls varsity at 3:30 followed by the boys varsity. The Kimball wrestlers will be at Sidney on Saturday for tournament action starting at 9 a.m.

In reflecting on last weekend’s action I have some good, and not so good news to report. On the negative side, senior Brady Kilgore suffered a hard fall in the closing seconds of the game at Morrill hitting his head hard on the floor and his status for this weekend is probably going to see him sitting out.I hope for his sake, and the team’s sake, it will be no longer than this weekend and the Christmas break.

A plus was the play of big Beau Hanks in the closing minutes at Morrill as he made some saving plays with rebounds and grab of loose balls plus his defense.

Carli Wurdeman is becoming an awesome long range shooter and she was pouring in the 3 pointers this past weekend, but at the same time, from her point guard role, she directed the Kimball offense and distributed the ball in good fashion.I also noted that Megan Spicer is a pretty sure bet to make her hard driving lay-ins, especially if she is coming in from the left side. She sure took a lot of hard rolls on the court on some of those drives to the basket however.Stay healthy...Please!

In the most improved department, I would have to give my vote to Jaren Winstrom. The 5’11” senior has really stepped up his game and has had to play starting roles and see a lot of varsity action for coach Luke Dea so far and he does the job well.He makes few mistakes, shoots the ball well, rebounds and plays defense. He works hard at his game.

Mike Daum is another guy who works hard at his game. The former Kimball High standout is now one of the Nations top college players and I know all of you “Big Mike” fans have been following his exploits on all of the national news sources but we still have to keep up with him here on the local scene as well.

In his final season at South Dakota State University, Mike was named the November Athlete of the Month for the Summit League. In the Jackrabbits 101-92 win over Southern, Mike became the Summit League’s all-time leading scorer with 2,509 career points, and the season is only like a third of the way through!

In that win over Southern he scored 42 points, was 13/18 from the field and 14/15 at the line and had 8 rebounds. At this time he is 63rd on the NCAA all time scoring chart. He has gone over 40 points 4 times. He is averaging 23.5 points a game and 10.5 rebounds. He has also set another school record for free throws making 657 of 772 attempts.Big Mike, all of your home town fans are so proud of you and keep it going!
