ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Kimball County Transit Could Step In To Help Deuel County

Kimball County Transit Services could oversee transit services in Chappell and Deuel County in the near future.

KCTS administrator Christy Warner approached the Kimball County Commissioners at their regular meeting Thursday, Jan, 3, for direction on the matter in order to to start on the new budget.

KCTS is in discussions of overseeing the transit service in Chappell if financially backed by the Deuel County, the city of Chappell and the Buckley Trust in Chappell.

"Jump in if Deuel County, Chappell and the Buckley Trust will financially back it," Commissioner Timothy Nolting told Warner. "I feel like we are set to do so."

The idea is that the Deuel County transit vehicles would stay within the community of Chappell, and the number or riders would increase under KCTS oversight. Part-time drivers there would stay on as employees.

Warner advised the board that she will be speaking with all three entities in Deuel in January – and soon hopes to have a better idea about the possible endeavor.

If an agreement is met and all other needs are agreed upon, KCTS could begin serving much of the southern Nebraska Panhandle.

In other business, the commissioners approved a one-year contract – the CenturyLink Master Service Agreement/Public Safety Version – between CenturyLink Communications LLC and Kimball County E911. The cost is $19,448.

Sheriff Harry Gillway said the new 911 system has been in place for almost three years, and there's a credit carryover from last year. He said this year would have the normal contracted rate.

"This is a good 911 service. It benefits the county's critical part of infrastructure," Gillway said.

The commissioner also set 2019 holidays to be observed by Kimball County. They are Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 21; Presidents Day on Monday, Feb. 18; Good Friday (offices open until noon) on Friday, April 19; Arbor Day on Friday, April 26; Memorial Day on Monday, May 27; Independence Day on Thursday, July 4; Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 2; Columbus Day on Monday, Oct. 14; Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 11; Thanksgiving on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 28 and 29; Christmas and Christmas Eve on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 24 and 25, and News Years Day on Tuesday, Dec. 31 (offices closing at 3 p.m.), and Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020.
