Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
The Kimball High boys failed to get past the first round in Western Trails Conference Tournament play this past week, losing at Bayard 40-31.
With the first round loss, the Longhorns were eliminated from advancing to additional play at Cougar Palace. Bayard suffered a 79-46 loss to Mitchell in semifinal play and lost to Hemingford 78-75 in the consolation finals to end up 4th.
It was a defensive struggle between the Bayard Tigers and the Horns with the hosting Bayard club on top 7-6 at the 1st q¥arter break, and Kimball leading 19-16 at half time. Bayard outscored the Horns 24-12 in the second half to secure the win.
Kimball faltered in the 2nd half play scoring only 9 points in the 3rd period and only 3 in the 4th quarter. A poor night of shooting once again for Kimball as they were 12/56 from the field for 21% and only 1/20 on 3 point attempts. They shot poorly at the line also making 6 of 13 for 46%.
They got the job done on the boards with 31 rebounds and had 12 steals. In other team stats they charted 9 assists, had 18 fouls and 17 turnovers.
Beau Hanks led Kimball scoring with 8 points and was top rebounder with 12. Brayden Tyan had 6 points and hit the only trey for Kimball. Brendan Walker and Sam Cajero had 4 points each, Corey Travis 3, Brady Kilgore, Izaac Reuter, and Zane Anthony all with 2 points each.
Bayard connected on 3 treys, had 11 fouls, and were 13/25 at the foul line. They had only 4 players score led by Justin Whitebear with 18 and Peyton Oliverius with 13. Dawson Kriha added 5 and Lane Hargens 4.
With the loss,Kimball’s record is now at 5 wins and 11 losses. They were to host a very strong Pine Bluffs club this past Tuesday, and will travel to Hemingford tomorrow (Friday). They will close out the regular season at Mitchell on February 15th before moving into sub-district play on February 18.
