Jock Talk

Not Much Local Sports Talk, But There’s Always Mike

Still not a lot to talk about as far as local sports activities. Stephen Bateman was named All Conference by the Western Trails Conference at 285 pounds, and Izaak Rohde was Honorable Mention at 182 pounds. The All Conference awards are given out by performance in the Conference Tournament.

The All Conference selections have been made for WTC boys and girls basketball also, but they have asked not to release them until the Bridgeport boys wind up their stay at the State Tournament.

Daum Update

We can always talk about Mike Daum, and I love to keep up with his latest endeavors. This past Saturday, the South Dakota State Jacks closed out their home season – and it was Senior Day, which involved Mike.

The Jacks got an easy 86-66 win over Western Illinois and with UNO losing to Oral Roberts, this gave SDS the regulars season League title. Mike had 20 points, was 6/13 from the field, 4/7 on 3 pointers, and 4/4 at the foul line. He got his double-double with 10 rebounds.

Since last week’s report, Mike was selected as the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week!

He was also named, once again, the Summit League Player of the Week. This makes 18 times he has won this honor. This season alone, Big Mike has 23 games of 20 points or more! The way I understand it, by winning the conference title, South Dakota State is guaranteed a berth in the NIT Tournament, but if they can win the conference tournament, like they have the past three years, they will get a berth in the NCAA tourney.

Whichever, Mike is going to get some more games to add to his enviable record setting journey. Go get ‘em, Mike!
