Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
Mother Nature Is Still Bringing The Winter Weather
Seems like I have been discussing the weather in my column about as much as I have been local sporting activities, and I guess the reason for that is because it plays a major role in what is happening, or is going to happen, in our sporting world. The Kimball Track Invite got cancelled this past Saturday because of .... the weather!
A quick decision was made by coach Gene Mohr and the Kimball High Administration to send the team to the Morrill Early Bird Invite. Coach Mohr said he took about half the team, and despite the cold and soggy conditions at Morrill, they had some very good results. Be sure and read all about them in an additional story in this week’s sports.
Now the schedule has Kimball going to Bayard this Saturday for the annual C-D meet, but guess what, the weather forecast is calling for rain/snow on Friday and cooler weather again on Saturday. Maybe it will happen? If so, it starts at 9 a.m. A day of rest and then Kimball is to go to the Creek Valley Invite in Chappell on Monday ... April 1st, also a 9 a.m. start.
Jeremy Williams, Four Winds Course Superintendent, is still trying hard to get the course open but the snow is still piled up in places and now with the melt, the course is very wet and with some warm days in the forecast this week, he is hoping to get it open. Not sure about the use of carts yet, but you will just have to check with Jeremy or Chad Wise and they will keep you updated. At least the High School team got to use the range this past week and are hoping to get some play on the course to prepare them for their upcoming season.
Jordan Greenwood, former Kimball High standout, who is now in his sophomore season at Southeast Community College in Beatrice, was playing tn his first spring tournament this week at the Midland University Invitational being held at the Fremont Golf Club. It is a two-day tournament and on Monday Jordan shot 81, and like all golfers, he wasn’t that pleased with his round. It was to continue on Tuesday, but due to deadlines, I will give you his Tuesday results next week.
I am sure all of you Mike Daum fans watched the South Dakota State and Texas game on TV in the first round of the NIT tournament play and know that Mike’s college career came to a close with their loss to Texas. Mike had his usual solid game scoring 25 points and got his double-double one last time with 12 rebounds. His 25 points moved him up to the number 7 spot in NCAA Division I career scoring with 3,067 points. Now we all await anxiously to see if Mike is going to be drafted into the NBA and continue his career as a professional.
Here is an interesting side light. Bruce Tjosvold, Mike’s coach at Kimball High, received a phone call from an NBA coach wanting Bruce’s opinion on Mike as a player, and as a person. The NBA coach said he likes to go back as far as he can to form his opinion on a player he is looking at. He got a top review from Coach Tjosvold. I have also heard that NBA coaches have been to many of Mike’s college games to scout him so I would think things look favorable for our Mike Daum to get a chance to continue his career as a Pro. In the meantime, the awards and honors keep rolling in.
