Kimball Dead Eye Shooters Earn Nationals

Kimball Dead Eye Shooters 4-H Club BB Gun Team 1 placed 3rd in the 2019 Nebraska State 4-H BB Gun and Air Rifle Championships earning a trip to the Daisy National BB Gun Match in Rogers, Arkansas, this July.

Team members are Julia Winstrom, Chris Foster, Jessica Terrill, Nolan Cook & Cody Brinkman. Anna Coleman and Tig Woolington will also attend the national match as alternates. The team is coached by Larry & Nicole Snyder.

“We were so excited to have a team qualify this year,” said Nicole Snyder. “All the kids who participated in this year in BB gun and air rifle worked very hard and many of them shot personal best scores at state, and you can’t ask for more than that.”

A total of 13 members of the club participated in the championships held on the Buffalo County Fair Grounds in Kearney on March 30th & 31st. Over 200 4-H members from across the state participated in this 2 day event which includes BB Gun, Sporter Air Rifle & Precision Air Rifle divisions.

BB gun competitors complete a 40 shot course of fire that includes 10 shots each in prone, standing, sitting and kneeling positions. They also take a test over range standards and firearms safety. Dead Eye Shooters had 12 members who participated as individuals and on 2 teams. Dead Eyes Team 1 place 3rd earning the trip to nationals. Dead Eyes Team 2 placed 14th and included Anna Coleman, Tig Woolington, Lane Cook, Makayla Woolington and Sophi Coleman. Individual honors were earned by Julia Winstrom for 1st place in the keeling position with a score of 96 out of 100 points.

Sporter competitors compete at a further distance and complete a 60 shot course of fire that includes 20 shots each in prone, standing & kneeling positions. The team of Julia Winstrom, Jessica Terrill, Chris Foster and Jared Barnes placed 4th, just missing the medals. Jessica Terrill placed 3rd in the 11-12 year old division with a score of 482 out of 600. Julia Winstrom placed 2nd in the 13-14 year old age division with a score of 521.

Precision Air Rifle is a 40 shot all standing competition. Participants use highly adjustable guns and special clothing which allow them to improve their accuracy. Three members of the Dead Eyes participated in this division. Julia Winstrom also took a medal in this division placing 1st overall with a total score of 361 out of 400.
