Local Golf Scene & Nate Lashley Are Glowing

Jock Talk

After another very successful golf event at the Four Winds this past Saturday for the annual TeamMates scramble, time now to focus on yet another fun golfing event set for this Saturday, July 6.

It is the Glow Ball, four-person scramble with nine holes playing in the daylight and nine more holes played in the dark.

Golfers will enjoy dinner in between rounds, which is included in your $75 per person entry fee. There will be lots of nice prizes, and you can bet it will be fun and challenging, so get your team together and get entered. You can call the pro shop for more info.

Nate The Great

Another golf happening over the weekend on the national level with a local note is the fabulous win by Nate Lashley as he captured the championship of the Rocket Mortgage Classic golf tournament in Detroit.

Many of you might recall that Nate played his high school sports at Mitchell and was an all-around standout athlete in other sports besides golf. After finishing his high school career at Mitchell, he took his golf game to the university of Arizona.

You might also recall the tragic death, and loss of his parents and fiance, in an airplane crash in the mountains of Wyoming as they were returning home from a golf tournament in Oregon where they went to watch Nate.

What a terrible thing to happen to a young man who was trying to put his life together based around the game of golf.

It took some time to get it done, but get it done he did this past week as he led all four days of play – and all this after making the tournament as an alternate. He was the last player selected for play and blew the field apart winning going away.

Going back to the local flavor, I can remember writing about Nate in basketball games he played against Kimball. He was very good in this game. Some people felt he was a showoff, but really he was just better than most. His behind-the-back dribble and passes were something he did with ease and with skill.

I always wrote highly of him in my coverage. When he made that final putt on Sunday to win, I can honestly say that tears started to flow down the cheeks of this old scribe.

Great job, Nate Lashley. The publicity you brought forth of Nebraska, and Mitchell and Scottsbluff, would not have been purchased for a price we could afford. His win will be talked about for years to come.
