Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Rockabillaque Proves Fun For All Ages

The first annual Rockabillaque event in Kimball is in the books.

Amy Sapp, economic director of the city of Kimball, said the Poker Run through the Panhandle had 18 motorcycles and 2 classic cars show up.

Jean Gilbert-Cole won the best hand, Spencer Morgan won the worst hand, and Bob Sisk won the bug run.

There were eight participants in the hot wing eating competition, a 5 minute timed competition of who could eat the most wings provided by Bearded Bastard BBQ. The winner was Troy Harper of Main Street Market eating 26 "Hate" wings and 2nd place was Corey Gardner gobbling down 18.

Cooks met behind Beer & Loathing at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday to check in and get their tri-tip, ribs, and beans.

Three cooks competed – Mark Whetham, Taylor Brown and Scott Eddy – competed in the cooking competition.

Taylor won best overall cook. However, the crowd raved about Mark's tri-tip. Judges were Alex Engstrom, Anthony Kuhns, Annette Brower and Jamie Thompson.

The street dance, food and games ran into a snafu when the weather took a turn for the worse between 5 and 6 p.m. The decision was made to move the band to Beer & Loathing's back stage patio and the food into Chute #7.

"Both bars worked great together in accommodating the needs of the community," Sapp said. "We had approximately 100 people show up for the food, and more trickled in and out of the bars and the band area. With the exception of the weather issues, which decreased the attendance, it was still a fun time for people of all ages."
