Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
Kimball has received a $10,212 slice of Nebraska's funding pie for recycling and waste reduction.
The grant money will go to the "Keep Kimball Beautiful" campaign.
Some funds will be for increasing recycling by providing collection services to rural residents and business. Other money will be for residential alley recycling collection and recycling trailers for local towns and events.
Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy Director Jim Macy announced this week that the department awarded $761,545 in grants to 20 recipients through the Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grant Fund.
Kimball was the only southern Panhandle recipient.
The Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grant Fund is made possible by a fee on solid waste disposed in landfills, an annual retail business sales fee, and a fee assessed on the sale of new tires for motor vehicles.
The grants are provided to waste management projects, including recycling systems, household hazardous waste collection programs, transfer stations and yard waste composting.
Tire fee grants totaling nearly $968,000 for projects related to tire recycling were announced in July. Kimball also received a $19,108 grant under that program for the city's highly successful scrap tire cleanup that brought in more than 150 tons of old tires.
