Football Longhorns Suffer 52-12 Loss At Hemingford

The Kimball High football team saw their record fall to 1 and 3 following a 55-12 loss on the road to Hemingford Friday night. The Horns have suffered some injuries that hurt their cause, and they have faced three very strong 8-man football teams already.

Christian Allen-VanPelt, a hard nosed junior, was pushed into a new role Friday with senior quarterback Brendan Walker sidelined with injury problems and did an admirable job for Kimball but the posing game hurt to some degree. VanPelt gave Kimball a short lived lead with his 23 yard touchdown run mid-way through the opening quarter, but the hosting Bobcats took over from that point and had a 21 lead by the end of the 1st period, and were on top 41-6 by half time. VanPelt scored again in the 3rd period on a 22 yard run and Kimball’s scoring was over for the night as they played with a running clock the entire second half.

VanPelt accounted for 75 yards rushing on 10 carries and had the 2 touchdowns. He also connected on 1 of 10passes for 10 yards with Beau Hanks making the reception. Jacob Withrow had 68 yards on 7 carries, Ethan Ratzlaff 44 yards on 9 rushes as the Horns had 169 yards rushing on 34 attempts and 179 yards of total offense.

Hemingford had 391 yards of offense with 361 rushing yards and 30 yards passing going 2 for 2 on attempts through the air. The Bobcats ran 49 plays to 44 for the Horns. Kimball also had 11 penalties for 70 yards compared to 6 for 60 for the winners. Brian Turek stood out for the Cats with 171 rushing yards on 11 carries for 3 touchdowns and was 2 for 2 passing. Tyler Coleman carried 10 times for 78 yards and 2 touchdowns, Neo Powell 13 times for 56 yards and 1 touchdown, and Carter Buchheit 8 times for 28 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Leading the tackle charts for Kimball were Jovon Coyle with 8 solo tackles,, Ethan Greenwood with 7 solo stops, VanPelt with 5, Jacob Withrow with 5, and Brayden Schildhauer with 3. Ethan Ratzlaff had 1 tackle and 2 assists as did Beau Hanks. Ethan Evans and Arthur Laveran both charted 2 solo tackles, and Kyle Evans and Jared Barnes both had 1 tackle.

The Horns will be looking for their second win this Friday evening when they travel to Perkins County for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The status of Brendan Walker was uncertain at the time of this writing. On a negative note, Brayden Tyan was to have shoulder surgery for an injury suffered in a game a couple of weeks back, and junior lineman Izaak Rohde is lost for the season also due to injury.
