Sullivan Heads To State; Chili & Pie Contest This Saturday

Good morning! I hope you all are doing well and as Nebraskans we are known to deal with whatever season we are dealt with – on a daily basis and sometimes several seasons in one day! Yesterday it was winter, and this morning we have spring.

Here’s what’s going on at home this week.

Thursday, Oct. 24, school will be dismissed at 1 p.m. so that parent/teacher conferences hopefully will take place. Times are 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. Good luck, parents.

On Friday, Oct. 25, Deven Sullivan will head to state competition for cross country in Kearney after finishing second at District. Good luck, Deven! Run like the wind! (Read more about Deven in the sports section.)

There will also be high school football that evening in Wauneta at 6. Good luck to you also, and safe travel for everyone.

We are so glad to hear that Matt Rundell is home and on the mend. The Harrisburg Community Church is inviting all of you to our chili and pie contest this Saturday evening, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m. Entering the contest is not mandatory for you to join in the fun and food. We will also be having a pickle spitting contest, and I have learned they will be Dill, so there you go!

Birthdays this week include: Sierra Fulk, Robert Farro, Jennifer Dillenger, Kippen Cochran,Barbara Thompson, Denelle Klosterman, Eric Anderson, Julie Rogers, Richard Johnson, and Carla Brown. Happy Happy Birthday!

Anniversary couple of the week is Mr. & Mrs. Art Olsen, congratulations.

Outside the home area, here are some options for things to do this upcoming week and hopefully they will go as scheduled.

Regretfully, the kids fun maze at the co-op in Scottsbluff was cancelled last weekend due to the high winds.

This is a busy time at the Riverside Discovery Center and today, the 29th, they will have Hay Days open and running. Also beginning the 25th, Friday, they will begin this year’s Spooktacular Dinner, which is available from 5-6:15 p.m. and then have the RDC open from 6:30-8 p.m. in celebration of the 31st annual Spooktacular itself. Yes, Halloween is upon us.

Also on Thursday, Oct. 24, today, there is a Farm Bill education meeting in Kimball from 8:30- 11:30 a.m. at the Kimball County 4-H building.The Kimball Extension office has more information.

Pre-schoolers are welcome to join Move & Grove story time at the Gering Public Library from 10-11 a.m. on the 24th or Storytime at the Lied Library in Scottsbluff at 10 a.m. and again at 6:15 p.m.

The folks in Torrington are presenting their community theater on the 24th & 25th at 7:30 p.m. The play is “ Mousetrap” by mystery writer Agatha Christie.

On Friday, Oct. 25, the Church of Christ at 1919 Ave.N in Scottsbluff will be offering a Free soup supper beginning at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

On that same date, WNCC will be hosting “Boos and Brews” from 7-10 p.m. For more information, please call 632-2226.

The Monument Mall will be the place to be for the 3rd annual High Plains Mini-Comic Con. They will be there Saturday, Oct. 26, with live music and much more.

Heading toward Lewellen, this year they will be celebrating the fifth year of “Halloween in the Hallow” at Ash Hallow State Historical Park, located 3 miles east of Lewellen. The time is from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and there will be a dog costume and kid costume contest plus games, food, and trunk or treat. If you would like more information, please call 778-5651.

Also on the 26th, there will be a Vet Upward Bound 20th year celebration out at WNCC in the Harms Center building. Lunch and live music will be a part of the celebration, which will be at noon. However, you must RSVP so get on it, 635-6042.

On Wednesday, Oct. 30 there will be Toddler Read & Romp from 10-11 a.m. at the Gering Library and that afternoon Lego Club will be from 3-4 at the same place.

The Holy Apostles Episcopal Church is offering a Soup Sampler Free Community Meal at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30. The church is located at 1730 18th St. in Mitchell, and they say costumes are welcome.
