Dundy County Girls Win Kimball Tourney; Longhorns Third

The Kimball High girls fell to Dundy County-Stratton in 1st round play of the Kimball Invitational Tournament this past weekend with the DC/Stratton Lady Tigers going on to defeat Morrill in the championship game for top honors, and Kimball winning over Potter-Dix to take 3rd place for honors.

It was a case of shots not falling for the Kimball girls in their first round pairing with Dundy County/Stratton. The Lady Longhorns were getting good shots but everything seemed to take the wrong bounce, or roll off the rim. Kimball held a quick 3-0 lead early, but the visiting Lady Tigers took over and controlled the contest from there on out.

Kimball shot 15% from the field making 9 of 61 attempts and were only 1/17 on 3 point attempts for 6%. Not much better at the foul line where they converted 6/16 free throws for 38%. They did a pretty good job on the boards with 32 rebounds but their opponents pulled 42 rebounds.

Katie Heeg led Kimball scoring with 9 points and tallied 7 in the 4th period alone. Heeg got Kimball's lone trey and also charted 4 steals. Megan Spicer had 5 points and led in steals with 5. Carli Wurdeman had 4 points, Sam Bemis 3 points and 6 rebounds, Payton Wise 2 points, Madison Merryfield 2 points, and Jenna Greenwood pulled 6 rebounds.

Dundy County/Stratton scoring saw Maggie Lutz with 15, Jessie Freeland 10, Haylee Davis 9, McKinzie Baney 7, Sabie Lambly 5, Sydney Reichert 4, and Kaylin Brown 4.

In the other first round pairing, Morrill won over Potter-Dix 45-8 to advance to the championship game with Dundy County where they lost to DC-Stratton 49-39, but gave the Lady Tigers a strong showing before losing it in the final minutes of play.

The Potter-Dix team is young but have 17 listed on their roster including 9 freshman players and are in a rebuilding era.

Unlike in first round play, Kimball got their shots falling in the consolation finals and had an easy win to take 3rd place honors.

For the night, Kimball shot 37% from the field making 23 of 63 shots including 5/9 from 3 point range for 56%. At the line they shot 9/18 for 50%. The Lady Longhorns also had 28 rebounds, 16 steals, 19 assists, 17 turnovers and 10 fouls.

A big night for senior Carli Wurdeman who led Kimball with 21 points and was 9/12 from the field and3/3 on treys!

Wurdeman was also the leader in steals with 5 and assists with 4. Sam Bemis was strong on defense and also hit double figures with 12 points and was top rebounder with 5, the same as Sydney Biesecker who also had 9 points with 1 trey.

Jenna Greenwood and Katie Heeg had 5 points each with Heeg netting1 trey and Greenwood charting 4 steals. Megan Spicer had 4 points, Payton Wise and Amy Birkhofer 2 each. Makayla Williamson had 4 for the Lady Coyotes with 1 trey and Ginny Herboldsheimer scored 1 point.
