Kimball Boys Edge Perkins County, Lose To Morrill

The Kimball High boys are 2-2 going into this weekend's play after slipping past Perkins County on the road Friday night and losing a hard fought battle with Morrill at home Saturday.

Coach Mo Hanks says "We are still hrting depth wise and run out of gas late in the game. We need to work more on our conditioning, and will welcome back Brayden Tyan and Javon Coyle after the Christmas break." Tyan and Coyle are both recovering from football injuries.

Kimball's win at Grant Friday night was an exciting contest that went right to the final buzzer before the Longhorns could mark it a victory. Kimball held a 10-8 lead at the quarter break but the hosts were up 22-18 at half time. Kimball surged ahead 34-33 after the 3rd period of play and held on for the win.

Both teams shot the ball well with Kimball hitting 42% from the field and were 9/25 from 3 point land for 36% while the Plainsmen were 39% from the field and 8/19 on treys for 42%. At the foul line, Kimball was 7/11 and Perkins County 8/17. Kimball won the rebound battle 29 to 23. In other team stats, Kimball had 16 assists, 5 blocked shots, 9 steals, 18 turnovers, and 16 fouls.

The Horns had 6 players score with 3 in double figures led by Sam Cajero with 14 including treys, Jacob Withrow with 13 going 5/7 at the line, and Austin Lulf with 12 on his 4 treys. Beau Hanks had 6, Brendan Walker 7 with 1 trey, and Thomas Muldoon pulled 6 boards.

Perkins County was led by Garner with 21, Hite 15, Garner 11, and Foster 7.

Coach Hanks said "It was a good high school basketball game and I am proud of our team for getting the job done".

The fans on Saturday night were treated to more exciting and well played high school basketball with the visiting Morrill Lions putting it away in the closing minutes. Like the Friday night game, it was close from start to finish Saturday with Morrill on top 12-10 at the quarter and the game tied at 28-28 at half time. Morrill was up by 3 going into the final period.

A huge night for Morrill's Kolten McMackin who came off the bench to score 29 points hitting 7 treys and going 8/8 at the foul line. Many of his treys were from well back of the arc! Tanner Whetman, 6'4" post, scored 17 points and Blake Lofink had 14 points with 2 treys.

Kimball had good balanced scoring from their starting five led by Brendan Walker with 15, Sam Cajero 12 with 4 treys, Beau Hanks 10 with 1 trey, and Austin Lulf 9 with 2 treys. Jacob Withrow had 7 points. Walker was 5/6 at the line and Hanks 3/4.

A double-double for Walker with 13 rebounds to go with his 15 points. Hanks had 6 rebounds and led the team in assists with 6. Withrow was high in steals with 3. Walker also charted 2 blocks.

In team stats, Kimball had 32 rebounds, 11 assists, 4 blocked shots, 7 steals, 14 turnovers, and 22 fouls. They shot 29% from the field and were 7/33 on 3 point attempts for 21% along with 10/17 at the foul line for 58%.

With a very limited number of players, the Kimball junior varsity is playing just 2 quarters and have won both of their games so far.

At Perkins County Kimball won 19-16 with Cole Heim high with 11 points including 4 treys, Thomas Muldoon 5 with 1 trey, and Cole Henton 2.

Kimball won over Morrill 26-7 with Muldoon high with 18 including 2 treys, Heim 3 with 1 trey, Henton and Ethan Evans both with 2, and Kyle Fraser 1.

ON THE ROAD

The Kimball teams are on the road this weekend to close out the pre-Christmas season. Friday night they go to Hershey with JV games set to tip at 3:30 p.m. followed by girls and boys varsity. Saturday night they travel to Bayard with JV game times at 2 p.m. followed by girls and boys varsity.
