Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
After falling to Hershey in first round play of the SPVA Conference Tournament, as reported last week, the Kimball Lady Longhorns came up with a big win over Perkins County on Saturday at North Platte to take 5th place honors.
In the 12 noon game at Mid Plains Community College to start the action Saturday, the Kimball girls won out over the Perkins County Plainswomen 41-36. Kimball jumped out to an early 10-0 lead and led 12-2 at the first quarter break, They ran their lead to 14-4 before the team from Grant went on an 8 point unanswered run to close to 14-12 before Payton Wise scored another Kimball basket to stop the run. Carli Wurdeman got a basket on a steal and Sydney Biesecker hit a pair of treys and despite being out scored 16-13 in the 2nd period, Kimball led 25-18 at half time.
It was a low scoring 3rd quarter and Kimball lost Megan Spicer to an ankle injury with 5:30 showing on the clock, and Coach Chauncey Pedersen had to sit both Sam Bemis and Jenna Greenwood as both had acquired 4 fouls. Kimball still managed to increase their lead to 33-23 entering the 4th quarter of play.
Perkins County came out strong to start the final period of play and scored the first 3 baskets to close to 33-29 before Jenna Greenwood made a strong inside move to score and then hit a pair of free throws to run the score to 37-31. After a trey by Perkins County to close once again to 37-31, Katie Heeg stepped up and hit a pair of clutch free throws with 1:08 remaining to get back to 39-36, but with 6 seconds left, Greenwood hit a pair of free throws to secure the win.
The Kimball ladies did not have a good night offensively going 13/48 from the field including 4 of 23 on 3 point attempts for 27% overall and 17% on treys. At the foul line they were only 11/27 for 41%. They di a good job on rebounding with 31 total and 15 were offensive. They also charted 3 blocked shots and had 20 steals, along with 6 assists, 16 turnovers, and 15 fouls.
In individual stats, Kimball got 13 points from Sydney Biesecker including 3 treys. Jenna Greenwood came through with some big plays and ended up with 10 points. Payton Wise had 5 points with 1 trey, Sam Bemis and Megan Spicer with 4 each, Carli Wurdeman 3 and Katie Heeg 2 rounded out Kimball scoring. Bemis had 10 rebounds and 5 steals to lead in both of these categories.
Perkins County ended up with 3 treys and were only 9/18 at the foul line and were whistled for 25 fouls. They had 7 girls score led by Hallie Fisher with 10, and Rylee Huff with 9. With the win, Kimball is now 5-8 on the season. They were on the road to Mitchell this past Tuesday, will host Sutherland tomorrow night (Friday), and go back to North Platte to face St Pats Saturday night.
