Banner County School Board Seats Up For Election

Good morning everyone this first week of February 2020.

Wow, did this ever sneak up on me. I totally did not realize the date and forgot to mention ol’ Phil and his weather prediction for the next six weeks.

I did see where he claimed six more weeks of winter. I also did see a comment in which that prediction did not apply to Nebraska because we do our own thing!

This past Sunday proved that with spring like temperatures followed by a few late starts and cancellations on Monday. Extremely icy roads.

Very little extracurricular activity going on at Banner County School, not that that is bad, for sure.

On Saturday, February 8, the high school wrestlers will be on the mats at Southeast for dual meets and the speech team will be in Chadron. Monday the 10th will find the junior high boys basketball team at Minatare with game time at 2 p.m. We wish you all good luck, good sportsmanship, and safe travel.

The regular school board meeting will be held in the school cafeteria on Monday, February 10 at 7 p.m. You are all invited and encouraged to attend. There will be two seats open for the upcoming election.

Birthdays this week include: Jack Faden, Skyler Mount, San Jaun Whelchel, Bryce Olsen, Larry Pahl,Karyn Olsen,Everett Mount, Barb Cooper, Roy Lyles,Mary Carter, Shelly Muggli, and Amanda Godfrey. Happy Birthday!

Anniversary couple of the week is Mr. & Mrs. Shane Cochran.

When not at work or play here at home, we can always find something to do, or someplace to go to enlighten ourselves. For example: three very different events will be available to you on Thursday, February 6th.

The Panhandle Research and Extension Center will host a Pesticide Re-certification Training program from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their location, 4502 Ave. I in Scottsbluff, while beginning at 4 p.m. at Regional West Medical Plaza South entrance there will be a Free Community Diabetes Education Seminar. This is expected to end at 5:30 p.m.

Then at 6 p.m. the opening of the Annual IMAGE exhibit will take place at the Western Nebraska Arts Center. This is the 38th anniversary of said exhibit and will run through March 1.

Actually looking at the time frame here, it would be real easy to catch all three of these events if one was inclined.

Friday, February 7, the Missoula Childern’s Theater will present “Beauty Lou and the Country Beast” at 7:30 p.m. This always involves local talent. Early that morning on the 7th, the first of two days of the annual Farm & Ranch Expo will start and the day will begin with Free pancakes and sausages from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The Expo will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, and it will run  again on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

On top of all that will be going on inside on Saturday, KNEB will be hosting a Team Sorting Contest with registration from 8:30 a.m. through 10 a.m. The actual sorting will begin at 11 a.m. and there will be three classes. The Peewee class is for ages 9 and under, the youth class is for those 10-18 years old, and the third class is open and for all ages. If you would like to pre-register go to https://www.scottsbluffcountyfairgrounds . Wow. quite a mouthful. This all will take place at the Mitchell fairgrounds.

At Broadwater on that same day, the Broadway Fire Department will be serving up pancakes from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m at the Fire Hall. Everyone is invited.

If pancakes are not your thing right at this time, maybe spaghetti is. The Calvary Memorial Church in Gering is hosting a charity event for the family of Sierra Fulk. A spaghetti dinner will begin at 6 p.m. followed by a silent and a live auction. If you would like more information please call 308-641-5855. The church is located at 26 18th.

If you are like me and have high school kids thinking about college, well Discover WNCC will be held for prospective college students and their families on Monday, February 10. This is for junior and senior high school students and tours will begin at 9 a.m. with information about financial aid and scholarships available as part of the program. For more information please call 635-6010.

Also on Monday there will be Proficient Master Gardner Training at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. At this same location on the following evening Master Gardener Training will be held at 5:30-8 p.m.  Earlier in the day from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. (this is the 11th.) at the PREC there will a class titled “Initial Pesticide Training.” Busy few days out there.

Remember also at the library in Gering, it times for toddlers on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. and Legos at 3 p.m.

Heading south, the Goodhand Theatre in Kimball will show the movie “Harriet” on Feburary 7 & 8 at 7 p.m. and again on the 9th at 2 p.m. These movies are all free and open to the public.

Here is one last note, a Heads Up. At the Kimball Banner County fairgrounds the weigh-ins for beef are being held weather permitting on Saturday, February 15 from  9-11 a.m.

You all take care and have a great week . Until next time, Barb Cross at 436-7152.
