Bateman, Cluff Win Championships
A good day for the Kimball High Wrestling Team as they placed 4 wrestlers and finished 4th in the team standings of the 11 team field of entries in the Mitchell tournament.
The Longhorns had two champions in Connor Cluff and Stephen Bateman, a 2nd place from Trey Schindler and a 3rd from Matt Johnson and scored 63 team points.
Coach Wade Brashear said, “As a team we wrestled very well. Stephen Bateman led the way at heavyweight, registering 4 pins on his way to becoming the champion at 285 pounds. He had to battle out of some tough situations, but found a way to do so.
“Connor Cluff was also a champion breaking a three-way split in a round robin bracket by pinning Markowski of Mitchell and taking 1st place by criteria.”
Coach Brashear went on to say, “Trey Schindler also wrestled well with two pins early and losing a tight match 8-6 to a returning state qualifier from Mitchell. Matt Johnson showed his best wrestling at Mitchell. He only got 1 win but looked great in his other two matches despite giving up 30 pounds to his opponents.”
Brashear said Joe Burris also wrestled well, falling just short of placing.
Cluff, wrestling at 126 pounds, was 3-1 on the day and won his 3 matches by fall. His losing match was by a 9-6 decision.
Bateman at 285 won all 4 matches by fall for his title. Schindler at 138 was 2-1 on the day and had two first period falls. Johnson was 1-2 on the day and had a win by fall. Burris at 145 was also 1-2 with a win by fall.
The Kimball wrestlers will be at Bridgeport today for the combined SPVA and WTC Conference Tournaments.
