Banner County Notes: Our World Is Starting To Come Back

Good morning, friends near and far! Here we are in June, and boy does it feel like it, great warm weather, some rain and thunder showers.

Our world is starting to come back to us ever so little. School is out for the summer but Banner County School has opened up the weight and conditioning room as of this past Tuesday, June 2. Days will be Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. You need to sign up for an open slot by going to https://forms.gle/WCBDciTEXVGGNNSS7 and there will be a form to fill out. If you have questions, please call the school at 436-5262. Some of you know that we first put our kids in the school system here back in the mid-1980s.

Well, that first one chose a profession that I never did see coming. He is and has been for several years a principal out in Nevada. He has pretty much always enjoyed sports, still is a Husker fan, and played football while he was a Banner County Wildcat.

So the other day I received a message from him wanting me to look up a particular article he had read. It was “10 extreme schools as seen via Google Earth.” Banner County School was listed there, and the reason was we were the “smallest school that plays football.” It went on to mention 6 man football and even though that is now a struggle for us, we are planning on playing this fall.

School restrictions will control most of that, but hopefully we play ball! Pretty cool to be in the top 10!

As you know, I have always called this little piece “New, Notes, and Nonsense” and this week I am happy to have a few more “notes” in here, and here they are:

As of June 2, the Nebraska Games and Parks are reopening all camping and swimming areas.

Registration for the 2020 season of Western Nebraska Football Club (formerly known as AYSO ) is open. Practice begins August 17 for boys and girls 5 and up, and ages 19 and up. This is a select soccer club and games will be played on weekends from August-October with once-a-week practices. For more information, please call 631-9003.

The Western Arts Center has a new show opening June 4, which will run through June 28. It is titled “The Exquisite Art of Thread and Textures” and features the work of Milla Malchow of Laramie and Mary Ellen Neff of Scottsbluff. This art form uses a mixture  of fabric and various mixed media. The Arts Center is located at 1st Avenue and 18th street in Scottsbluff and is closed Monday, open 9-5 Tuesday-Friday, and open 1-5 on Saturday and Sunday. The YMCA is opening, including the pool.There is no sauna or hot tubs, and numerous dates and hours, so please give them a call at 635-2318. Area swimming pools and splash pads are still closed. Bummer.

It may change some more, but at least for now 4-H will have County Fair this year, but like we have never seen it before.
