Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
Kimball's Longhorn Football team continued to struggle as the fell 70-to-28 to the Perkins County Plainsmen in a game that saw the visitors take an early lead and pull away for a lopsided victory. Plagued by five turnovers, with four in the first quarter alone, the Longhorns were unable to avoid the costly mistakes that have kept them winless so far this season. Kimball Head Coach Ben Aarestad said, “It seems that we keep making the same mistakes over and over again.”
Perkins County scored eight rushing touchdowns, while the Longhorns couldn't seem to make a tackle when it counted. “We didn't tackle very well Friday night. It seemed like we had a guy with a chance to make a tackle every play but we just didn't. When we get a chance to make a play, well we just can't make a play”, said Aarestad.
After opening a 56-to-16 lead at halftime, the Perkins team put up 14 more points in the third quarter, then ran the clock out in the fourth. The Plainsmen defense swarmed all day, causing six tackles for losses, three interceptions and a sack. Junior Triston Hite kicked off 11 times for Perkins County, with 10 kickoffs sailing into the end zone for touchbacks.
The Longhorns look for their first win of the season when they host Bayard on Friday. Aarestad said, “I think Bayard will come in and try to spread us out and try to run the football. We just need to find a way to make plays when given the opportunity and tackle somebody.”
Bayard has also struggled this year with a 1-and-4 record, giving the Longhorns hope that if they can minimize their mistakes and tackle better, they will get that first win of the season.
