Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
Kimball’s Longhorn football team had chances to earn its first win of the season on the road against Hyannis, but mistakes and penalties sent Kimball to their six straight defeat, 16-12.
Kimball finally had an opponent that has had similar struggles in the season with the Hyannis Longhorns, but every good play made by Kimball was countered by a penalty or a mistake that made a winnable game a frustrating effort.
Not only did the Kimball squad have two touchdowns called back because of penalties, they also had two easy touchdown passes dropped. The Kimball mistakes made what should have been a solid win turn into a devastating loss.
“The penalties were awful. We had more penalties called on us in this game then we’ve had for the entire season,” Kimball Head Coach Ben Aarestad said after the game. “Our kids really need to learn how to make plays. We would have beat them by four touchdowns if we made our plays and avoided the penalties.”
A Longhorn team with some talented and fast skill players still could not play as a unit for a full game, with mental lapses and penalties letting the Hyannis team hang around long enough to steal the victory.
“It was a really tough game for us”, said Aarestad.
Kimball plays its last game of the season on Friday as they travel to face the 5-and-2 Hemingford Bobcats, a good team that will be a challenge to uspet for the Longhorns’ first win of the year.
Aarestad said, “Hemingford is a really good team that’s going to run it every play, and we’re going to have to be ready to tackle them. It’s our last game of the season, so we want to just go out there and have some fun and honor our seniors one last time.”
