Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
At least two organizations are providing a Thanksgiving meal to shut-ins and others in need of a great meal.
The Red Knights Motorcycle Club NE Chapter 4 is providing Thanksgiving Day meals to families "that could use a little pick-me-up this year," according to Austin Garner of the Red Knights. Orders for meals from the Red Knights have to be confirmed by Tuesday, Nov. 24, so those who want meals should get a hold of Austin or other Red Knights and tell them how many meals they need.
Although Garner said the Red Knights have an abundance of great cooks, the Thanksgiving meals are prepared at the grocery store and will be delivered by the Red Knights on Thanksgiving Day.
The Red Knights host a Poker Run to obtain funds for their various community projects, including this Thanksgiving meal.
Another Thanksgiving tradition is the midday meal at First English Lutheran Church, which usually serves 100-125 people. The church has been providing this meal for the past 20 years.
According to church member Diana Engstrom, the meal started out as an outreach project. The church felt there was a need for a Thanksgiving meal for people who would normally be alone. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the meal this year will be either delivery or curbside pickup. This is the first year that there is no "eat-in" meal.
People are asked to order meals ahead of time, but orders also will be taken on Thanksgiving. To order, call 308-235-2768, email [email protected] or leave a Facebook message @KimballLutheran.
The meal will be provided at the church, 501 S. Webster, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday. There is no charge, but there is a freewill donation that will be shared in part with the Kimball Food Pantry.
The traditional dinner boasts of turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravy, dinner rolls and pie.
