Coyotes Sweep Storm, Split With Garden County

Potter-Dix’s Coyote Basketball teams hosted the Creek Valley Storm Thursday night and the home team was able to pull out two wins against the visitors from Chappell. The action started with the Lady Coyotes facing off against the Lady Storm, two teams that have struggled all season for wins. The girls’ game started as a defensive battle, with Creek Valley holding an 11--10 edge after the first quarter while the Potter-Dix team struggled with turnovers. The low-scoring second quarter featured the Lady Coyotes continuing to turn the ball over but the Lady Storm unable to capitalize by scoring. The teams went into the intermission tied at 15-to-15, and the third period began with the team’s trading scores only to have Creek Valley hit a three point shot in the final seconds to take a one point 28-27 lead into the fourth quarter.

Potter-Dix started the fourth quarter with a quick four points to take a lead, followed by a Creek Valley three pointer to tie the game back up at 31-to-31. Potter-Dix sophomore Kylie Fiehtner started to get into a groove, scoring under the basket and from the outside. The Lady Coyotes were able to keep up the pressure while sinking free throws, and led by Fiehtner’s 10 points down the stretch they held on then pulled away for the 44-to-36 victory, their second of the year against Creek Valley. Fiehtner led the scoring with 20 points, including 10 points in the fourth quarter to close the game. Potter-Dix overcame 38 turnovers to earn the victory.

Next up, the boys teams squared off, and both teams traded early scores while the Coyotes had trouble holding on to the ball and difficulty passing. But the athletic Coyotes were able to settle down, and pulled out to a 14-to-11 lead at the end of the first period. Potter-Dix followed up with a dominant 22-to-10 second quarter to open a 36-to-21 lead at the half, with the speed and athleticism of Potter-Dix sophomore Luke Kasten, junior Thomas Muldoon and senior Javon Coyle proving too much for the Storm as the Coyotes put up another 40 points in the second half to breeze to a 76-to-47 victory. Kasten led the scoring with 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the double-double while Muldoon added 20 points in the victory. Creek Valley senior Oakley Hodges scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds for the double-double in the loss.

On Friday the Coyote teams traveled to Garden County to match up against the Eagles, and the Lady Coyotes looked to carry the momentum of their previous nights’ win into the contest, but found themselves down 15-to-5 at the end of the first period. The Lady Coyotes ramped up the defensive pressure in the second quarter, but still struggled to score and went into the halftime trailing 22-to-11. The Lady Eagles then clamped down on the Potter-Dix offense in the second half, only allowing seven points in the final two quarters as they took the 42-to-18 victory.

The boys team continued their hot play in Garden County, building a quick lead and going into the halftime up 33-to-27. A strong second half followed, with the Coyotes putting up 44 points in the half against the Eagles’ 27, and the Coyotes finished the game with a convincing 75-to-54 victory. Kasten again led the scoring with 36 points in the victory to improve Potter-Di’s season record to 13-and-4. Potter-Dix was next scheduled to host Peetz on Tuesday then Leyton on Friday of this week.
