Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
Potter-Dix's Coyote basketball team had two big wins going into subdistict tournament play last week, overpowering Leyton on Feb. 15 and then dominating Minatare on Feb. 19. The Coyotes earned the number one seed in the D2-11 Subdistrict Tournament at South Platte High School starting on Monday, Feb. 22.
Monday's contest with Leyton started out as a defensive struggle, with both teams defenses dominating the action until Potter-Dix was able to go on a run and led at the end of the first quarter 13-8. The Coyotes' offense started clicking and continued to score in the second period and openend a 34-13 lead at the half. Leyton fought back with a good third quarter, but it was not nearly enough to overcome the deficit and Potter-Dix cruised to a 52-28 victory.
Potter-Dix sophomore Luke Kasten lit up the scoreboard with 30 points in the victory.
On Friday, Potter-Dix hosted Minatare, and again the Coyotes had a slow start until a 30-point outburst in the second period put them in command of the game. The visiting Indians only managed four points in the second half as the Coyotes cruised to a lopsided 76-22 victory, again led by Kasten with 16 points in the win.
The Coyotes go into the D2-11 Subdistrict Tournament as the favorites, and were scheduled first play Minatare on Tuesday, Feb. 23, in South Platte.
