Here Come Arbor Day & Earth Day, But What Season Is It?

Banner County

Good morning! Whatever season we are in today, I hope that it is a good one.

We have a few options this week to get out and enjoy ourselves as long as a snowstorm does not pop up and cancel them out. That is still a possibility for this time of year.

Last week, school was cancelled here and in several other school districts. Hopefully that will not be an issue in the remaining school calendar.

The Scottsbluff Rural Fire Department will host its annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday morning, April 24th from 7-11 a.m. The pancakes and some raffles can be found at 1717 E 15th Street.

Saturday is also when Earth Day will be celebrated at the Main Street Market (Co-Op) from 10 a.m to noon. If you are in the mood for a little Spring cleanup here is what they will help you dispose of: plastic bags, documents that need shredded, cardboard, auto batteries, propane bottles, and used oil.

They can not accept household batteries, electronics or tires. However, they will also gladly do water well testing and give away free trees and cloth bags.

Earth Day is followed closely by Arbor Day. Some city offices will be closed on April 29th in observance. J Sterling Morton, the originator of Arbor Day and the Secretary of Agriculture in the 1890s under President Grover Cleveland, also opened Arbor Lodge State Historic Park and Arboretum in Nebraska City, which has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1962.

This 52-room mansion is beautiful and worth your time if you are visiting the area. Here at home, the District Music contest is taking place at WNCC today, April 22nd, and this evening the FFA Banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m.

On Friday, April 23rd, the high school track team will head to Pine Bluffs and meets will begin at 8:30 a.m.

The seniors are planning to be sneaking off this Sunday, and be gone yet come Monday. Let’s hope that that happens.

Also on the 26th, the junior high track members will be heading to Leyton for a meet against Dalton. More track on Tuesday, April 27th as the High School Best of the West competition begins. Good luck and safe travel to all of you. Good weather, too.

Here is a heads-up: The preschool and kindergarten Round-Up will be on Friday, April 30th. Always a fun day.

Birthdays here this week include: Rebecca Wenger, Joshua McGowan, Trisha Lind, Julie Smith, Mai Lee Olsen, Kathy Malm, Logan Carlson and Annette Knaub. Happy Happy Birthday!

Anniversary congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Bill Baker, Ryan Olsen and Alan Olsen.

Well that is all for now. Take care and stay safe until next time.
