Moving On, Up And Forward

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far. Here we are in the middle of May and the school year will be over for most of our area students by the end of the week.

Our last day for the kids is Thursday with a 1 p.m. dismissal. Hooray ! Senior graduation was this past Saturday and it was very very nice to be able to have an actual graduation ceremony. Now we will move on, up and forward.

Needless to say, the school calendar will be empty after this week until next fall. The high school state track championships will be held in Omaha Friday and Saturday, May 21st and 22nd and that is all folks! Good luck and safe travel to any students headed that way.

I am sad to say that two of our local residents have passed away this last week.

Jim McGowan, my backyard neighbor as I was growing up and a Banner County resident for many years, passed away recently and will be missed by friends and family.

Also leaving a big piece missing in many lives is the loss of Deb Albertson (Eich ), another Banner County resident for many years. Our sympathy goes out to all of you.

Birthdays here this week include: Erika Cochran, Brett Farro, Kinlee Olsen, Jon Vrtatko and Lane Bernard Smith. Happy Happy Birthday!

Anniversary congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Chris Cooper, Brock Elsen and Matt Rundell.

Meanwhile, the Food Bank for the Heartland will be at the Episcopal Church on Friday, May 21st. This will be a drive through and will be available 5-7 p.m.

One more thing ... the annual cleanup day for the Harrisburg Community Church will be on Saturday, May 22nd beginning at 9 a.m.

Beginning on Friday, May 21st through Sunday, May 23rd, the movie “News of the World’ will be playing at the Midwest Theater. This is about a captured girl during the Civil War being rescued and returned to her family. The first two showings will be at 7:30 p.m. and the matinee on Sunday will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Meanwhile at the SkyView Drive-In on the 21st the movie will be “Scott Pilgram vs. the World-10 Anniversary!” This will be shown again on Sunday. Both movies are rated PG and begin at 8:45 p.m.

Saturday the 22nd there will be a class offered by Eastern Wyoming College titled “Buckin Horse” from 9 a.m. to noon. You are advised to wear paint clothes and gloves. Please call 307-532-8323 or stop in at the CTEC building at 3200 West C street to register.

Closer to home, in Gering there will be a “Kick-Off Summer Craft Event” at the Monument Inn & Suites.This will take place from 12:30-5:30 p.m.

Also on Saturday, May 22nd, all of the State Parks will be open with Free entry and fishing in observance of Fishing & Park Entry Day in Nebraska. If you need more information please go to calendar.outdoornebraska.gov.
