Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
The Plains Historical Society is excited to sponsor a special quilt show during Farmers Day Weekend, Sept. 24-26, in the Kimball County Transit Service building at 3rd and Chestnut. There will be quilts on display, a silent auction, a quilt raffle, and a special "bed turning."
There will be no charge to see the show. Hours are Friday 4-7 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
If you have a quilt you would like to show, please contact event organizers as shown below. Any quilts are welcome from art quilts to antique, to modern – and especially quilts related to the Kimball area. Quilts that have been made by area residents, or signature and friendship quilts, anything with provenance and pertaining to Kimball. Pre-registration with a liability wavier is required, and a bit of provenance or information would be nice.
The silent auction, quilt raffle and other proceeds will help the historical society preserve items in the museum. Donations will be welcome.
A special showing called a "bed turning" will be on Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. There is a limit of 10 people for each show and there is a fee for tickets.
A bed turning is an old tradition from the Colonial period. It was a social event for the ladies to show off their fine textile, especially quilts and bed coverings to their relatives, friends and neighbors. For this particular bed turning, Jan Sears will display her quilt collection with quilts that are 100 or more years old to more current times. Details of the fabric and history of the quilts will be included.
The drawing for the "Patriotic Eagle Star" quilt, pictured with this story, will be at 4 p.m. Saturday. The silent auction will be open Friday and Saturday and close at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. To purchase tickets on the raffle quilt or to reserve a ticket for the bed turning, or to register you quilts, contact Jan Sears at 308-279-0163 or [email protected], or any of the Plains Historical Society board members.
