Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
The Kimball Lady Longhorns on Sept. 30 traveled to the WTC Volleyball Tournament at Mitchell and came away with their first two wins.
In their first match against Bayard, Kimball lost 25-12 and 25-19. Seniors Amy Birkhofer and Tianna Stierwalt each had four kills, and senior Riley Hinton had 10 assists.
Then came the consolation round, and Kimball was up to the task. The Longhorns matched up with the Hemingford Lady Bobcats and won in straight sets, 25-19 and 25-19. Birkhofer led with 11 kills and senior Maddison Merryfield had three ace serves.
Fueled by their first victory of the season, the Lady Longhorns then faced the Morrill Lady Lions, another team looking for their first win of the season. It was not to be.
Kimball came out strong with a 25-10 win. Morrill was able to regroup and battle hard in the second set, edging out the Lady Longhorns 25-23. But Kimball poured it on in the third set and won, 25-13, to take the match.
Birkhofer again led with 12 kills and also had nine ace serves.
Meanwhile, Mitchell beat Bridgeport in the finals to become a “six-peat” champion in the WTC tournament.
Kimball looks for another win Thursday when they host Morrill.
