Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
Kimball's Lady Longhorns basketball team continued its good start to the season by splitting two games against rivals Perkins County and Morrill over the week.
The results moved the Lady Longhorns to 3-2 on the season with one game left to play in December on the road against 4-0 Hershey on Friday, Dec. 17.
Saturday, Dec. 11
Kimball 53, Morrill 38
Kimball hosted the Morrill Lady Lions and started strong with its offense moving the ball well and getting good looks from the field. The Kimball defense did a good job disrupting the Morrill offense and was able to build a 16-10 lead at the end of the first period.
The Lady Longhorns ramped up the defensive pressure in the second period, giving up only a few good shots by the visitors to extend their lead to 28-15 at halftime intermission. Kimball continued the solid defensive play while continuing to score in the second half and pulled away with solid 53-38 victory.
Senior Chantel Malson led the offense with 15 points in the victory, while she and senior Payton Wise each grabbed eight boards for the Lady Longhorns.
Also scoring for Kimball were Maddison Merryfiled (12), Katie Heeg (9), Wise (9), Amy Birkhofer (5), Emma Patterson (2) and Jasmine Gawith 1). Merryfield also brought in 7 rebounds.

On Friday, Dec. 10, the Lady Longhorns matched up with the Lady Plainsmen and quickly fell behind as their aggressive defense limited Kimball's shot opportunities while working their offense to get good quality looks at the basket.
The Lady Plainsmen built a 37-16 halftime lead en route to a 64-34 victory. Kimball stats were not available.
