Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
Kimball's Lady Longhorns basketball team returned from the holiday break on Tuesday, January 4, traveling to Big Springs to match up against the Lady Blue Knights.
The contest started as a defensive showdown, with both teams doing their best to limit good looks and easy baskets by the other team. But the South Platte girls were more successful in the first half, getting their shots to fall and taking advantage of Kimball miscues to build a 24-15 lead at the half.
South Platte put the game away in the third period, exploding for 23 points while putting the clamps down on the Kimball offense, opening a 47-21 lead going into the fourth period.
South Platte emptied their bench and subbed freely in the fourth and cruised to a 54-32 victory.
Kimball senior Madison Merryfield had 11 points to lead Kimball's Lady Longhorns in the loss.
On Saturday, the Lady Longhorns returned home to host Chase County, and the high-powered offense of the visitors quickly proved to be too much for Kimball.
Chase County tallied a 28-point first quarter followed by 15 more points in the second quarter to go into the halftime with a 43-6 lead.
Both teams played out the second half substituting freely, and scoring little, and the Chase County team wrapped up a 60-19 victory.
Merryfield again led the scoring for Kimball with 12 points.
Kimball was scheduled to travel to Potter on Tuesday, Jan. 11, to match up against the Potter-Dix Lady Coyotes.
